Apple iPhone 4 32 GB
Advantages: It does EVERYTHING!
Disadvantages: Slower than my 3GS
I loved my iPhone 3GS. I never realised how much a phone could do until I got one of those, and there was never room for boredom again! Then I got mugged and some young thug cycled off into the sunset with my phone. So when the insurance paid out, I was delighted that I was going to get an upgrade as the 3GS was no longer available. I was so proud of my new shiny iPhone 4 when I came out of the Vodafone shop. I went for the black option as I thought it looked better than the white one. It looked slicker than the 3GS, and it was bound to be better than my last phone wasn't it?
The iPhone 4 squarer than its predecessor. It doesn't fit as comfortably in to the palm of your hand as the 3GS. But it looks much nicer and in my view more expensive. Dimensions are; height - 115.2mm, width - 58.6mm; and depth - 9.3mm. It weighs 137 grams.
I am not in to the technical stuff, so there will be a lack of that in this review - I just want a phone that I can use and is fun! The iPhone 4 is easy to use. Once set up and synced to your PC, it is easy to download songs and apps via iTunes and the App Store. The choice of apps is great, and there is something for everybody on there. It is easy to switch between screens by just sliding your fingers across the screen to scroll through the main menu pages.
Calls are easy to make, and the contacts are easy to store in your phone. I like the favourites page, where you can add a list of the people you call most often to make their numbers easier to find - its a bit like speed dials on a key pad phone. There are about 25 different ring tones to chose from, from church bells to a duck quacking, and it is easy to assign different ring tones to different contacts. The call quality is also very good and I have never had problems with not hearing people.
Texting is also easy, either sending a new one or replying to someone else's. The major downside to this is autocorrect. I have seen many funny emails flying round about this which have made me laugh a lot at other peoples embarrassing texts, but it is incredibly frustrating when a normal word can be turned into a made up one, or sometimes just a downright rude word! I still haven't quite mastered that and I think people are used to deciphering the occasional random word that autocorrect has checked in there for me!
The iPod is also great, with a huge amount of memory for hundreds of songs! I also found it easier to set up a playlist than on the 3GS. The sound quality on this is also amazing.
The camera rocks! It apparently is a 5-mega pixel camera (this means nothing to me but it takes a good picture). I have some amazing photos that I wouldn't have managed to get previously without my camera. It has a flash, zoom and you can even press a button so the camera is revered so if you are taking a picture of yourself, you can actually see what you are taking, rather than press and hope, and end up with half your head missing! It is easy to scroll through the pictures, and very easy to email or text them to your friends.
There is a volume button on the side, and it is easy to turn the phone to silent with the flick of a little switch. It is easy to turn on and off, and to lock the phone so that you don't make any strange calls to people.
My main issue with the phone, is that it can be incredibly slow! I have had to turn it off and on many times in order to get web pages to load. I have been into the Apple shop and was told I had to phone and make an appointment. When I called I was told I would have to re-sync my phone and start again. I wasn't particularly happy with this - the instructions I received were confusing and I ended up losing most of my apps which I hadn't saved properly. I spent £510 on this phone, and felt that Apple could have done a bit more when I am standing in a shop in front of them having made a special trip there! Since my poor attempt at following their instructions, the phone has improved, and a majority of the time loads up quicker now, it I still have to turn it off and on again, and that seems to fix it, but it's a pain.
The other issue is the battery life. It has improved, and it does charge quickly, but it does seem to run down very quickly so if you forget to charge it you can easily get caught out.
All in all, I love my iPhone 4 and would not be without it, but we have had a few teething problems, and there are aspects which are worse than the 3GS (the fit to your hand, the slowness which I hadn't experienced before) but I think I can safely say, that once you have had an iPhone, you'll never go back!! I get my upgrade through Vodafone in February, and am looking forward to trying out the new iPhone 4s!
Thanks for reading! Also on Ciao as MrsW2011.
