Apple iPhone 4S 16 GB
Advantages: camera video build quality fun
Disadvantages: battery life (but recently upgraded to be better) expensive, no widgets.
The iphone 4S was much anticipated by apple fans and critics (like me) mostly because we were actually expecting the iphone 5!! However in truly apple style, they did not disappoint. This upgrade from the iphone 4 really does take the top spot of this year's smart phone.
The robust chassis is exactly the same as the iphone 4 and maybe have stated that they wanted a different design with perhaps a bigger screen and some rumours have said that the iphone 5 will be fully touch screen with no home button. I still think however that this compact design is perfect to hold and and will obviously fit any old accessories you may own for it's predecessor.
The 8 mega pixel camera now matches any other phone on the market and apple has claimed that they have installed a new technology which enhances the images taken by drawing more light. I do not claim to be a tech-geek but all I know is that my photos are bright, clear and very impressive for a mobile phone. You can also edit images really easily and at the touch of a button, remove red eyes, enhance or crop images.
The 1080p video recording is equally amazing and even the sound is very acceptable for taking simple home movies. The video camera apparently uses the accelerometer in the phone to steady the images if the shots are taken whilst moving. Gorgeous movies!
Siri is the new all singing (literally you can ask it to sing) all dancing (well that might be pushing it) virtual assistant who can send texts, make calls, search internet terms, check the weather, set alarms, make meetings and more....
The wonder of Siri is that he/she seems to know what you mean. It has been programmed to understand many diffferent terms and so you can check the weather by asking
'is it going to rain today' or 'whats the weather like' or even 'do a need an umbrella'?
I have to say that the novelty of impressing friends by asking silly questions and predicting the weather
wears thin pretty quickly. Siri designers will seriously need to get a move on in terms of programming more uses like sat nav directions, local business in the UK and being able to open apps. For now though it is brilliant for setting alarms and checking my schedule.
The rest of the features are pretty standard for knowledgeable iphone users. However, it is the little things that count such as the new feature of taking pictures with the volume key instead of touch screen. Ibooks now allows you to use the your phone as an ebook reader and icloud allows you to have all your apps and media on all your apple devices.
The down sides
You will only appreciate the lack of widgets if you have used an android phone. I must say it is annoying having to find a setting by clicking through endless screens. Android widgets on the other hand let you control things like brightness, 3g on/off and wireless from a home screen button panel. The closest the iphone 4s has come is the new notification bar which lets you know about new messages and or facebook tweets etc. Come on apple, its meant to be user friendly.
Expense! the iphone itself is always pocket lightener but apps and accessories should definitely be cheaper or indeed free. Plus apps just dont seem to do what android counterparts achieve in terms of changing defaults. You cannot change the default keyboard or media player which means that apple controls what file types you watch and there's no chance of easier typing like you get with swype keyboard.
In all though, I am thoroughly impressed with this phone. Like all other users you tut at on the bus on train, I am always engrossed in a game, the news, text, email or webpage. What it lacks in cheapness and usability, it makes up for in build quality and the ability to resist crashes and hold a decent internet connection. I love my iphone.
