Apple iPhone 5
Advantages: nice design, great apps, advanced technology
Disadvantages: keyboard can annoy me at times
The iPhone 5 is very modern and sleek looking which is why I love it, it is 112g in weight which feels really light to hold, it measures at 7.6mm in depth which is a very thin design and what makes it special. The back of the phone is made from aluminium and ceramic glass and it has the Apple logo on it as well as the camera on the back too, the one thing I hate is how delicate this model is, I had to buy a cover right away as I didn't want it getting scratched or covered in fingerprints. Another aspect of the iPhone 5 is that it has a nano SIM card which slots in at the side and also on the side are + and - buttons and a silent button and power save is on the top.
APPLE IPHONE 5
To start with getting this phone up and running is quite simple, the packaging is very minimal for this as is the same with most Apple products. It comes in a beautiful box and inside is the phone charger and then a book and some Apple stickers. I stuck the charger in right away but it powers up fine anyway, a small Apple icon appears on the screen and then you are taking to the main screen which has all of the icons on it. To get your SIM card inserted is not the easiest to work out, I had to Google it to find out the small key that comes in the box is what opens the side up, you turn it and then the door opens and you can put the SIM in.
The whole SIM card process is really fiddly if I'm being honest but I can see why they do this for security. Once the SIM is in, it does register really quickly and you can start using the phone. The battery is easy to charge, I plug my charger in over night and you know it is in as the phone make a weird noise everytime the charger is inserted. You can see the percentage of battery power left in the top right corner of the screen, it really is easy enough to use and I find the battery lasts me well for a whole day that is making calls and texting frequently, it will only drain quicker if you are playing games constantly but otherwise I am pretty pleased with the battery life.
What I also love the most is the navigation and functionality of the phone, being touchscreen it is so easy to use, sliding across screens is so easy to do and it responds very quickly. You can see all apps easily as they are big enough and clear and you can swap the order of them if you want to have your favourites on the front screen. What I also like is that you are able to group apps as well like you can group banking apps into a Finance folder or Travel apps into a Travel folder, it is just easier and grouping them clears the clutter from the main screen so that you can tell where all of the apps are kept it is simple but clever.
My main problem with the use of the screen is the keyboard, it is a touchscreen keyboard but when texting I find it a nightmare as I am constantly making spelling mistakes as my fingers seem to big for the keys, maybe it's just me but it is annoying when I read what I text people as it is so badly spelt. It does highlight spelling mistakes and holding the word down it will give you options and you select the word if it is what you meant. Also, if you are surfing online on your phone you just pinch and push the screen to zoom in or out which is great to use. It opens a lot of windows on safari if you need to and it is a nice bright display on this phone.
Next, I'd say the notifications are all very loud but easy to hear, the email alert is quite standard but you can of course change them all if you want. There is an ok range of ring tones but most are quite well known and you can choose different text message alerts too and alarm clock noises too. You can adjust the volume of them all too and if you want them off completely there is a switch to the left of the phone which turns the phone on silent. The settings menu is where you can adjust most things like data roaming, location settings, date and time, privacy and so on, it is all under here and everything is titled which is easy to turn on and off.
The App Store is great as all you need to to do is search what you want and then download it, it will either charge you or it will be free but it should install instantly and then you can open up the app and begin to use it. You will get notified when there are updates for the apps that you have and then you can just update them instantly with ease. The camera on this phone is very good and so clear, it is 8 megapixels but it auto focuses right away and there is the option of turning the flash on and off and also you can turn it so that it is facing you to take a photo and this works for things like Face Time which is brilliant to use as well.
Bluetooth is on this phone and is so easy to set up although mine won't bluetooth with my Macbook Pro which is annoying, so I use Instashare. Also, it is 3G and wireless, it connects to the internet quickly and once you have entered a wi-fi password for a connection you frequently use then it will just automatically connect next time you are in the vicinity of that wi-fi which is helpful. The speaker and microphone are at the base of the phone and the circle button on the front is the home button which will automatically bring you back to the main screen again. This phone has 8 hours talk time if on 3G and 10 hours internet use on wi-fi.
The charger also has a USB cable on it if you want to charge on your laptop or anything and you can sync via iCloud if you want to add music or files onto your phone. Adding contacts is pretty straightforward as well and it will put them into alphabetical order and you can add photos to contacts and make people favourites too. You can assign different ring tones for different people and you can create a personal voicemail message if you want to do so. The video quality is great for Face Time but you need to be on good internet connection or it will cut out quite often, it is basically the Mac version of Skype and it is fun to use.
The phone is 123.8mm in height, 58.6mm wide and comes in 16GB, 32GB or 64GB. I find the 16gb fine for me but it depends what you want to add on to your phone. Call quality is always really good on this, you can use speakerphone, mute people and signal is usually fine, it is easy to adjust the volume by using the buttons on the side. One of the greatest apps on this is Maps, it is fantastic and you don't need a sat nav when you have this, it is better than the sat nav I had, clear voice, easy to navigate on, good directions, highlights bad traffic spots and how long they go on for and has brilliant display, it doesn't use much data and you can choose to overview your route and see it in 3D, one of my favourite apps.
As far as phones go, I love my iPhone, it is so easy to use and just very trendy, it loads up quickly, is easy to navigate and has a great display. Apart from the keyboard being fussy when I type on it, the apps are the best, I can finally get a lot of the apps I couldn't get on my Nokia as the majority are created for iOs. The connection is always good on calls, my internet is always on and it doesn't drain my battery or my data plan which is really good for me, I connect to wi-fi when I can and all of the notifications are handy. The ringing volume is good for me and I love that I sync my emails to my phone now and I love the display for texting.
I think any Apple fans would love this as it is a great phone and the apps available for it along make me happy to recommend it. You can buy a lot of games for this but so many are free which is great, you can add earphones into this if you want to but I find sound quality very clear on this, display is clear and it is just so light and easy to hold, I can fit it in my bag and even with a screen protector on it, I can still use the touch screen with ease, no problems. I don't play music on this or anything but the camera is also a plus, easy to share photos with others. It is cutting edge technology and if you haven't used this phone before, you need to give it a go.
This phone is available to buy outright on Pay as you Go or you can do what I do and take it out on contract. I stuck with o2 as they gave me a great deal, I pay £32 a month, paid nothing for the phone and I get unlimited minutes and texts and 1GB of data which is more than enough for me and definitely affordable.
