Blackberry Curve 8520
Advantages: Great for email, social networking and the basics
Disadvantages: Not so great for browsing the internet
Well I got my Blackberry last October on a contract with Vodafone. I went into Vodafone and explained that primarily I wanted a phone that was excellent for emailing and using the internet. The salesperson was right that the phone is excellent for receiving emails. However I was let down on the internet side. So I now wish I had purchased an Iphone! However I will try to review it on every aspect of the phone and try not to let my anger with the internet on this phone get in the way!
I love the look of this phone, I have it in black. It looks very businesslike and professional. However one downfall to it is that after 6 months the Blackberry sign on the back of the phone has fallen off. By this I mean that the back of the phone has stuck on silver pieces which make up the Blackberry sign and 4 of these pieces have fallen off. This is quite annoying because it looks like a phone I have dropped on the floor or not taken care of.
***Colours of the exterior of the phone***
The Blackberry now comes in several colours such as white, blue, purple, pink and black. I think the black and purple one still look professional however I think the other colours tend to make the phone look slightly cheaper.
* It comes with the basic games
* It has an application centre from which you download lots of free or
paid applications like facebook, other games, cinema times, maps,
restaurants in your area and many more
* It has a 2mp digital camera
* Media centre for pictures, videos and music
* Internet browser
* Address book
* Blackberry messenger (like MSN)
* Help centre button
* Word documents
* Excel documents
* Voice recorder
* The ability to set up multiple separate email boxes which link to your
regular email accounts
* + many other features (I couldn't possibly list them all)
***Size and weight***
It weighs just under 4oz which I would say is a moderate weight and with all the new capabilities of phones nowadays I think this is an average weight for a phone.
Its height is approximately 110mm and its width is approximately 60mm.
I thought it would be useful to have the added bonus of the keypad on the phone rather than touch screen however, the buttons of the keypad are so small that text messages take me far longer to type that they should do. I have sent text messages on my dad's Iphone and they are so much quicker and easier to do (another reason I wish I had the Iphone to the Blackberry!)
***The accessories I got with the phone in the box***
* USB cable
***Reasons why I love the phone***
That different symbols occur on the screen for different alerts, so if I haven't heard my phone go I can look at the screen and know whether I have an email or text or Blackberry messenger or a missed call. Similarly I love that when I receive a message a red button lights up every 5 seconds. This is great when my phone is on silent.
Also its battery life is very long which is a real plus when I occasionally forget to put my phone on charge the night before.
***Things which annoy me about the phone***
The screen is not very big which means that whenever I try to access an internet page I get to see about a 10th of it and whenever I try to scroll down the page it causes the page to reload itself. So it takes a good 10 minutes to just look at one internet page.
***Price of phone***
All prices differ depending where the phone is bought and on what contract it is bought on or if the phone is bought separately from a contract.
I got this phone free from Vodafone on a £40 a month contract. This consists of 900 minutes, unlimited messages, unlimited internet and unlimited Blackberry messenger. So I am sure you can get one for around £20 a month on a contract with less minutes.
To buy the phone outright it is about £140.00
***My overall opinion***
If I am going to rate this phone fairly I would have to say it is a great phone, but just not the best internet phone. But if you want to do all the basics and use just emails then i'm sure you'd love this phone and the added Blackberry messenger is great if you have lots of friends on Blackberry's as it means you can communicate quickly for free.
Summary: A great phone which needs an easier internet browsing system
