Advantages: Exclusive feature in BBM, not a gimmick like the iPhone, practical

Disadvantages: The fashion concious may prefer the iPhone if they are a sheep and follow the masses.

I have had phones in the past from the major mobile phone brands, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Samsung etc. When my contract came up for renewal at the beginning of 2010 I decided I would take a closer look at Research In Motion and their range of Blackberry handsets. There is a fierce rivalry between iPhone owners and Blackberry owners - both believing their phone to be the best. I dont have personal experience of the iPhone but what doesnt appeal to me is the fact that a lot of people just buy the iPhone as an unnecessary accessory, a fashion statement that doesnt get used to its full potential. I believe that Blackberry users look for a phone that is more based on function than form. The iPhone is an object of desire and beauty (although I have never found them attractive), whereas the Blackberry has very much being about the handset doing its job efficiently and with minimal fuss.

The Blackberry I own is the Curve 8520. On the face of the phone there is a full QWERTY keypad and various other essential buttons including a trackpad which is a very useful 'button' for navigating through the various menus. Down the sides of the handset there are volume up/down buttons and one for the camera too. Blackberry does have its own 'App World' where you can download applications specifically designed for the Blackberry. There are games, route planners, schedule planners, currency convertors, the usual things you would expect and a whole lot more! Overall there are enough 'apps' to keep anyone busy. You can also download a seperate Facebook application and also one for Ebay which allows easier navigation of their websites in a condensed version. The Blackberry comes with a built in camera which is very useful, there are many different settings etc. on the camera function aswell as the 2.0MP digital camera. In summary, the following features are available for the Blackberry Curve 8520

Available Features

* 2.0MP Digital Camera
* Video Camera Capabilities
* Supports BlackBerry App WorldTM
* 256MB Flash Memory
* Wi-Fi® enabled
* Bluetooth® enabled
* Multimedia Player

Overall I am very impressed with the capabilities of the Blackberry Curve 8520. There are many accessories that you can buy in addition to the phone. You can add different covers, leather cases, rubber pads to hold the Blackberry to your dashboard etc. My favourite feature, however, is the Blackberry Messenger function. Each Blackberry handset has its own unique 'PIN'. BBM (Blackberry Messenger) is a programme similar to MSN chat, but you must know somebodies BB Pin to add them to your contacts list. The advantages of this are that BBM is exclusive to Blackberry users so there is the exclusivity factor, then there is the important fact that you can give out your pin to people without giving out your mobile phone number. The obvious plus to this is that you can block PINs you dont wish to speak to, and they cant call you up or send you a text message. Overall this is an excellent feature and one I have used ever since becoming part of the Blackberry phenomenon.

Summary: Great all round phone and social organiser.
