Blackberry Curve 8520
Advantages: Robust. Vodaphone network coverage excellent. Business phone.
Disadvantages: No hiding. Utterly un-flashy and basic.
Nowhere to run
Ah, the good old days of business. What email, Steve? Look, I'm on site and there's no connection through their corporate firewall. I'll just have to respond to your request to eat up an hour of my time doing meaningless administration when I can.
No more. You can run, but you can't hide. The vodaphone network will find you in all but the deepest, darkest or most remote areas. To make things even worse, I had to learn to type with my thumbs in a act of dexterity so challenging, the mobile almost met with an accident.
What's it all about, Alfie?
My sons were acquainted with the joys of smartphones well before me. Now a inescapable fact of life, I actually like mine. It is a standard Blackberry curve 8900. No longer new and superseded by those with greater form and function, but it is a tool and a tool that works.
Coming from the old days of dumb mobiles, the blackberry first seems like a small house brick. You quickly adapt. What is more difficult to get used to is the keyboard. I can now rattle off emails and send sms messages with a fair deal of rapidity. Is it as good as a keyboard, of course not. But it is as good a compromise as you're likely to find.
Where it scores a little low is the clunkiness of its predictive text, often more of a pain than a help. There have been two occasions over the last few years where the alarm has failed to ring, despite being set correctly. Removing and reinserting the battery always cures this problem. I do it once a week, need or no as a preventative measure.
The battery life of the phone is actually very good. It will sleep by itself given half the chance, much like my cat does. Sliding it into the supplied faux-leather holster will also do this by default. The 3.2 MP camera has been handy when out and about to snap this or that and I've become quite ok at Sudoku. A free Chess game would have been nice, instead of the silly brick breaker one.
Blackberry messenger allows free texting between blackberry users, a quite useful feature though one that became notorious when a certain section of the population figured out the police were not going to do a damn thing about looting because the political appointees in power above them would throw them to the wolves at the first whiff of potential scandal. (Rant / off)
The calendar function is simple, but useful as it is easily synched with your mail server. There are other functions such as GPS and a painfully, painfully slow internet browser. I can recommend the blackberry's robustness as it has been dropped several times (accidents, honest) onto hard surfaces and apart from the occasional scratch, it has recovered each time.
Yes, I now have no excuse to avoid doing the occasional pointless exercise. But the benefits by far outweigh the drawbacks. This would make sense as a pay as you go phone or on a suitable contract, but don't plan to impress anyone with it. This is a simple smart phone best used for business.
Summary: Does what it says on the box, and does it well.
