Disadvantages: Android 1.6 at time of this review, 2.2 now available! So no disadvantages :)
I would like to start this review with a remark that I`m not an Apple fanboy and I`ve waited for a looong time for this gadget to hit the market. For the month of ownership, the Streak never ceased to amaze me and I believe that the following review will be of a great use to you all.
So let's get started...
What's in the box?
The artwork on the box suggests that you'll have an edge to edge display, unfortunately it's not. Inside you will find all standard stuff like a USB charger (both with EU and UK plugs), USB cable and a microfiber pouch that can be used as a cleaning cloth. The one piece I`d like to emphasize on is the 3.5mm handsfree kit with an impressive sound quality and above average bass, plus you get three sets of rubber buds to fit right for your ears.
Design
The main idea behind the Streak`s design is for you to have a device that is big enough to be used as a tablet and small enough to be used as a phone. It ended up to be a good looking gadget, which is quite an attention seeker while using it as a phone without a handsfree. Actually its size is just right, but it's not possible for one to surf single handedly. It weights 220g, but the thing you`ll notice is its "thickness" of 9.9mm that was the first wow effect for me. The built quality seconds to none (even to my precious PSP). The rounded edges and the matt finish allows you hold it comfortably without that slippery feeling. The Gorilla Glass really proved to be idiot-proof for me and still not a scratch on it.
Hardware
The 1GHz Snapdragon CPU is just fine and I find no lag or delays whatsoever. The 5"capcitive display looks sharp, with no light leakage or over saturation. The resolution of 800x480 is optimal for viewing web pages in landscape mode. I also have the largest supported 32BG MicroSD card to store movies and MP3z though I use it as a PMP. The front-facing VGA camera is ok if you want to have a look at yourself on the 5"screen, but I never got it to work for Fring or Skype video chat. I hope that with future updates it will get in use. The five megapixel autofocus camera with its dual LED flash performs well during daytime, but don't expect to use it as something else than a torch at night.
Battery
For the capacity of 1530mAh and having in mind the screen size, it is an absolutely brilliant performer. At heavily usage of 2-3 hours a day of all around device usage (mainly surfing the web, some video and audio playback and at least an hour of telephony) it lasts for a whole 3 days. I`m impressed. Hope it will keep up that good for the time being.
Software
Since Streak ships with Dell customized but outdated Android 1.6, I can't wait for the final Froyo update that is supposed to be available soon. Sure there are lots of custom roms by various developers, but in my experience nothing is that stable as the official updates are. I`m not into reviewing the appstore, but I have no problems with compatibility so far and all my needs are satisfied. GPS navigation looks great on the hi-res 5" and the satellite hook-up is really fast. I use Gmaps and if you are not limited in data I recommend it.
Conclusion
It's not perfect, but it's close. It is a stylish, hi-tech performer that will never mislead you to the wrong direction. If you are an attention seeker and want something that will turn peoples head, than you've got to have it. With the 2.2 update coming, it will get that perfect as it should be. And yes - you can fit it in your back pocket. Streak is a true bargain, don't miss it.
Edit: Android 2.2 available in UK now!!!
Summary: 5 star performer and attention bringer
