HTC Desire S
Advantages: Cheap, and love the Android market
Disadvantages: Poor battery life, slow and unreliable internet connection
I chose this phone after MANY hours of research. I wanted something that would be high-tech enough to last the duration of a new 24 month contract, but wasn't willing to pay the price for an iPhone. My previous phone was an oldie that was desperate to be replaced, so I wasn't sure how I would adapt to a smartphone but I have found it very easy to manage.
Pros - The touchscreen is very receptive and the colours are impressively vibrant. The camera is great, I have even used it to replace my digital camera. Every app you could possibly think of is on sale on the Android market, and the phone's memory is large enough to hold them! Great for social networking, as your contacts will be synced with their profiles. Much cheaper than some of the other smartphone rivals.
Cons - The internet connection is quite unreliable and can sometimes take multiple refresh attempts before it will load, although this could be an issue with my network (Orange). Batter life is poor and needs charging every day. Just a tip - to preserve battery life make sure 'background data' is turned off. However, if you do this, you will have to sync before you use the Android market which can take a while if you haven't done it in a few weeks. Like most new phones the screen is large and vulnerable to scratches so make sure you invest in a decent cover and screen protector.
Summary: Great cheap alternative to an iPhone with all the functions you will need, but keep charger close by
