Advantages: Speed, reliability and technology.
Disadvantages: Battery life
I spent a while umming and rrr-ing over whether to stick with Blackberry (new Bold), be a sheep and choose the iPhone (3gs) or take the leap toward the HTC Desire. On paper the HTC's spec trumps the other two- in reality I still agree.
The HTC certainly isn't as pretty as the iPhone, with it's polished OS and design- I was at first slightly shocked that my HTC's case has a slight purple tinge (don't panic it's negligible). However the actual systems performance wins; the flash capability means I can enjoy video embeded on sites whilst on the bus (excellent the odd movie). Youtube etc as with most phones now works well. In terms of apps, obviously the choice isn't as vast as the itunes app store, but there hasn't been anything yet that I've wanted and haven't been able to obtain; and further to this I haven't yet paid a penny for any app.
I'll admit I miss my Blackberry, for e-mail handling it was unmatchable. I seem to wait ages for the googlemail app to deliver any emails (POP3 for hotmail is reasonably fast). However the up side is that it has driven me to unsubscribe to all the rubbish that I used to simply delete.
Major downsides: battery life is terrible, I recommend buying a dock with 2nd battery charger (£20) and a spare battery; speaker for music play back isn't very loud- but then who really walks down the street using the speaker.
Camera is good, but recommend a finding a new app (free) with more settings. The integration of Google apps (free) is excellent. HTC sense is good. Predictive keyboard is the best I've used, very quick, and there are apps to make it even quicker (free). Froyo upgrade (free) was godsend- still yet to use the nifty hotspot app (free). The desire is very customisable, though I'm not quite geeky enough to take advantage of this, but love the fact that I know I could.
I'm well outside the honeymoon period and still love this phone.
Summary: A phone with so much further potential, but amazingly still delivers as is.
