iPhone 3GS 8GB
Advantages: So many apps and such great functionality.
Disadvantages: Camera is rubbish
I was always a Nokia kind of girl; I wanted something dependable, indestructible and comfortable. I didn't want an iPhone because a) they were expensive even on contract and b) I didn't really see the need.
The more I got to thinking about it though, the more I liked the idea of being able to keep my music, phone and diary in the same place. Admittedly I still carry a diary in my bag, and I often forget my headphones, but the thought is there.
My 3GS is on PAYG - I was lucky that when Mom's contract ended, she gave me this "old" phone. It had a crack up the back (all four in my family seem to?) but apart from that it was in good nick. I've had to get the Home button replaced and that cost £40. Seems a lot but it'd be costing me that a month on contract I guess, and by that point the phone would have been out of warranty anyway. I looked it up and you can buy the button for a couple of pounds and do it yourself. I did take the phone apart but stopped short of soldering it - leave that to the experts!
I was quoted £40 to get the back casing replaced as well; again you can buy these for a few pounds so I think if you can get the original off, it's not worth spending the extra on.
What I like best about this phone is the flexibility that comes from the app store. There really is an app for everything and most of the ones I like are free. One thing that does bug me is that I can't change the ring tone for a music track - even my Nokia could do that! But to be honest it's easier to keep the phone on silent. What I am surprised about is the battery life - my phone does really well! That said, I do have the internet turned off because that was costing me a fortune on PAYG, so maybe it does a little less than other peoples.
I know that there is a new version of the iPhone now but there is nothing at all wrong with this one. The only thing that concerns me is whether in another year or too (and I'm sure my phone will still be going strong) the Apple software will stop being compatible with the phones - this happened with the iPod touch 1st gen and it screwed mine over.
The size as well isn't the best, but you wouldn't want a smaller touch screen so it's a trade off. I couldn't go back to a smaller phone now after having all the functionality of this one.
Camera is a bit rubbish (heaven forbid you should try to take an action shot) but I think that if you can't afford the newer model with a better camera, this and a cheap digital camera are a good compromise.
Summary: Great smart phone that can do everything you want except take amazing photos
