Say hello to the main competitor of the Iphone, and welcome to the battle of the super phones, Palm Pre.
The phone comes only in black but looks very sleek with the pebble shape giving you enough screen to play with. The phone includes a QWERTY keyboard that slides out from under the screen, which is great once you get used to it but the small buttons do make it a challenge for self confessed technophobic.
If you are into your games you will be spoiled for choice with the in-built App Store for the pre, however you will find that most of the games and apps are either quite expensive or really poor, also look out for a glitch with some games that makes some apps unusabal with a message the reappears (Too many cards open!), even though the Sprint claim that the phone can open up to 5 cards (Apps) at a time, I have only been able to open 3. However some of the 3D games are amazing!
Sporting a good-ish memory of 8GB to which you can story your music, photos and videos but does not have a flash card slot to add more memory.
The sound quality isn't the most amazing in the world, with music struggling to play over some loud sounds (head phones are a must with this phone).
The touch screen is great, clear and very responsive, including a handy accelerometer that will change the view of the screen from portrait to landscape with some apps and is also involved in some games like Need For Speed you use your palm as if it were a steering wheel, this really makes the game extreamly enjoyable. WebOS the phones Operating system is very easy too use with a on-board guide with the phone if you are struggling.
If you are the proud owner of a Facebook account then all your contacts will be apart of the Sync function, say you have your friend Bill on facebook and his number in your Palm then when Bill calls his profile picture will appear. The Sync function is also included with the calender and emails, getting you organised with reminders from Google and a great Email client.
Unfortunately there have been some horror stories about the Pre, mainly being about how the head phone jack stops working and how the slider is damaged easily and as much as I love my Palm Pre I have to say the rumours are absolutely true, sad to say but my headphone jack is breaking up and my sliding screen keeps wiggling about. The battery power is... there is only one word for it and that is 'Pants', lasting only about half a day if you are using it through out, if left on stand-by then it will last just about the day (however Sprint are releasing a battery upgrade!). The bribe that Sprint have given is a little gadget called the Touchstone Charger which is wireless charging, otherwise you are using the old classic way of just hooking it up.
If you are intimated by Apple and their Iphone then this is a great alternative but with dodgy hardware its a little bit of a risk but if you a game junkie, music junkie or just like a gadget then it is a good choice for you.
Summary: Good alternative to the Iphone
