Advantages: Tough, inexpensive smartphone.
Disadvantages: The battery and memory could be better.
Otherwise known as my first smartphone.
I was worried about moving up to a touchscreen and the possibilty of pressing in the wrong place and rendering the phone un-usable, especially as I love to fiddle with my electronic toys and am more than a little clumsy.
This bit of self knowledge did come to pass. I touched the wrong place and turned the phone Bulgarian and couldn't turn it back, as Bulgarian is not one of the languages I do speak. I had to be rescued by the nice chaps at the T-Mobile shop down the road, which they managed without having to wipe all my numbers and start from scratch. So if you do end up in the same boat, go to the shop, go directly to the shop and they will help you.
With an English speaking smartphone I started playing with Apps.
I had been craving a Kindle but the Kindle Fire was not out and grey on grey was not an option for my appalling eyesight. I pressed the Market app which was preinstalled. I downloaded the Kindle App.
I now have a full colour Kindle with the black text on white background which my terrible eyesight needs and a machine which fits my hand so comfortably that I use it every day.
The Navigation fuction saves me from getting lost on a regular basis while I am warned of traffic problems local and ahead of long drives by the AA and RAC apps. Then there is music and games to keep me amused and the news and social networks to keep me up to date and connected.
It even makes phone calls and messages.
The phone does need regular feeding, as the battery could be better, especially if you keep the GPS on. But it does eat from a USB lead while you are doing other things as well as from the mains charger.
The on board memory could be a lot better and my next love will have more brain as well as a better camera. But the camera on the Droid has never failed me, unlike my digital camera which always runs out of juice when I need it most. It also easily synchs photos and music between the Droid and the computer.
Most importantly for a clumsy and accident prone person, this smartphone is one tough cookie. I've dropped it on a fairly regular basis and it still going strong and giving me no problems but lots of joy.
If you are looking for a cheap, robust first smartphone, you won't regret opting for this one.
I haven't.
Especially as I got it as a free upgrade when I renewed my mobile phone contract.
Summary: A great first smartphone.
