Sony Ericsson Satio
Advantages: Amazing Camera, Touch Screen, Brilliant Functionality
Disadvantages: Not as sleek looking as the iPhone
Ever since Apple released the iPhone, people have been too quick, in my opinion to line up contenders for the crown of best smart phone on the market. One of these wrong choices as far as I'm concerned is the Satio. This is because that any phone manufacturer wanting to compete directly with the iPhone has to be suicidal because of the unique 'battleground' that the iPhone has and that is, applications of course.
Now, other mobile/cell phone manufacturers are not able to compete on the applications grounds or the phone/pc integration grounds that Apple have built for themselves, but that doesn't mean you should forget any other phone than the iPhone and i'm here to tell you why.
First of all, let's look at the hardware itself, it may not be the prettiest phone on the block, but what it lacks in looks, it makes up for in functionality and usability. With a 'hump' on the back created by the camera, it may turn away the image conscious among you, but it's a small price to pay for the amazing features.
As previously mentioned, the Satio can't compete in terms of applications but let's look at it's other features. It is still a touch screen smart phone with a nice menu and icon presentation, the display will orientate itself to suit your viewing angle, either vertical or horizontal, you can download and watch movies on it and the storage space can be considerably increased. Then we come to the icing on the cake, the 12mp camera. Now, how many times have you been fortunate enough to have your phone handy when a unique photo opportunity presents itself, only to look back on the shot at a later point and realise it's blurry, too dark or too light nd is therefore useless? With the Satio ad it's 12mp camera, the chances of that happening are slim to none.
With face recognition software built in, you will no longer get blurred faces on photographs. Built in anti-shake will aid you in taking that memorable shot as well as your standard shot functions such as red eye reduction, automatic flash and different scenery shooting options. The macro mode is also amazing, perfect for capturing minute details such as models or any other use you may have for close up shots.
The photographic capabilities don't stop there though, Sony Ericsson have went over their already effective photo editing tools and improved them even more! The Satio comes equipped with enough photo editing tools to give you an amazing amount of control over the final, finished product such as light levels, red eye removal, text, cropping and clip art.
The video camera is not to be sniffed at either, with a built in 'light' it's like having your own mini movie studio in your hands! With a high enough definition to allow you to share your movies in confidence with family and friends.
The audio quality for music is also fantastic and it offers the phone full functionality as an MP3 player in conjunction with it's media centre.
When the Sony Ericsson Satio first hit the shelves, it earned itself a bad reputation, the software it was first distributed with was shown to be totally unreliable and incompatible causing the phones to crash horribly. However, this problem has now been fixed and the latest distributions are free of this problem.
So the next time you are considering what phone you want to get, think long and hard. Do you want an iPhone just to be part of the 'in crowd' or are you looking for something that has features which far outweigh the 'flashyness' of other products? I hop I have given you some food for thought ladies and gentlemen, thankyou for taking the time to read my review!
Summary: A great phone, a total shame it is more often than not overlooked by prospective buyers.
