Advantages: a great range of apps. that dont have to be I-approved.
Disadvantages: the batterylife makes you wish it ran on AA's so you could switch them over on your way home.
I got my Android G1 in January and couldn't believe what an amazing phone it was to begin with. Stylish, up to date technology and more and more features available on a daily basis because of the "android market".
Ive always had a thing for stylish new phones and usually upgrade to the best available at the time which is how I ended up with the G1. It was actually a toss up between this and the I-phone. what tipped it was the physical QWERTY keyboard rather than just the onscreen keyboard and also the tracking ball for specific navigation rather than just hoping my chucky fingers hit the right button.
In 10 months I havent had a single fault with this product. there was times before the "cupcake" update (1.5) where I would need to turn the phone off and on again due to it slowing down significantly.
Applications wise there has only been one essential issue that i have had and that was with text messaging continuously "force closing" but that was due to having over 10,000 texts saved to the phone. (I dont blame the phone for giving up at that point) as soon as I deleted a load it was working fine.
my top 5 applications for this phone would be(not including standard phone apps e.g. messaging, contacts, camera etc.):
1. taskiller - closes non essetial programmes that are running. (increasing speed)
2. gmote - with use of wifi using your phone to control your computer and playing your computer music through your phone is great
3. google maps - regularly use this as a satnav. use latitude to see where my friends are.
4. toggle settings - a quick launch to open settings for bluetooth/gps/wifi/airplane mode
5. Internet - quick and easy to use. easy to navigate and clicking on links.
along with applications this phone also allows you to have "widgets" on your homscreen. running in the background for up to date information.
the ones I use most are for the
-music (shows what is playing and gives a play/pause and skip button),
-current weather,
-volume control (all aspects of volume whereas the side buttons only do ring volume or music volume depending on what screen youre on)
-post it notes (leave a quick reminder to go to the post office and spot it everytime you use your phone)
- google search. simply type in your search and it opens the browser with the search results.
Pros:
amazing phone. much better than the i-phone (in my point of view)
great apps to improve the phone
stylish, smart and robust
great messaging app (reaads like an instant messaging conversation)
cons:
terrible battery life for constant users.
internet can be a bit slow
some apps force close if you're too quick for the phone
no flash for the cam.
so, all in all its a 5/5
I will be keeping this phone after my next upgrade and selling my upgrade. i think ive found my phone for life.
well maybe for another year anyway.
Summary: could do with a couple of tweaks but worth taking a punt
