Mars Galaxy Bubbles
by Sarahjh
I will be the first to admit that Galaxy chocolate does not usually come top of my shopping list. But our local discount shop had a heap of the Galaxy bubbles 100g bars on offer at £1.50 for 2 bars. Mars confectionery have been producing top quality chocolate and sweets since 1932, maybe one of the most famous chocolate bars that they ... have ever produced is the Mars bar. I had never bought a Galaxy bubbles bar but because they were reduced in price I felt I had nothing to lose. Galaxy chocolate was first introduced in 1960 and there are Galaxy Minstrels, Galaxy block chocolate, Galaxy caramel, Galaxy cookie crumble, Galaxy counters or a Galaxy flake to choose from.
The wrapper on the chocolate bar is slightly different. The normal Galaxy chocolate bar has a dark brown and white wrapper but the Galaxy bubbles bar comes in a lighter brown wrapper that is tinged with a dusky pink. Quite an eye catching wrapper with a few `bubbles` floating across the front and the words `Galaxy bubbles` and `new` floating across the top of the paper wrapper. Remove the outer paper sleeve and the bar of Galaxy bubbles chocolate is swathed in a shiny pink foil wrapper. I feel that the wrapping is aimed at the adult market, there is not a sign of anything remotely childish about this bar of chocolate.
Unfold the lovely pink foil wrapper and therein lies the bar of Galaxy bubbles. The bar of chocolate has a fluted edge, it is marked off into pieces and each piece is marked with the letter`G`. I may be mistaken but the bar of Galaxy bubbles is quite slimline. Remember the old style Galaxy bar?, a thick bar of creamy chocolate that comprised of pieces of chocolate that were memorable. Each piece was something to `get your teeth into`. This chocolate bar looks elegant and suitable for catwalk models to devour in between changes of clothing.
The bar of Galaxy bubbles does look appealing though. The chocolate is `snappy`. By that I mean that when you break a piece away from the bar it snaps cleanly. Mars confectionery seem to have created a refined chocolate bar. Bite into a piece of Galaxy bubbles and take note of the thin layer of aerated chocolate that lays within. The chocolate is sweet but I feel that it is not quite as sweet as the normal Galaxy bar. I quickly check the wrapper on an ordinary bar of Galaxy and find that the calorie content is much the same as are the nutritional values. One 5g piece of The Galaxy bubbles bar contains 28 calories.
Mars consumer care advise that the bar of Galaxy bubbles chocolate is fine for vegetarians. In the list of ingredients I notice that the bar may have traces of nuts, though the nuts cannot be tasted. The outer shell of the chocolate bar is firm and that has to be `sucked away` before you reach the soft sweet layer of bubbled chocolate that lays inside. Ordinary Galaxy chocolate often tastes a little sickly to me but the Galaxy bubbles does not have that effect. In the name of research I have now eaten over a half of the bar!
I have just checked with Tesco online to see what price they charge for a 100g bar of Galaxy bubbles chocolate and their price is £1. So it seems that I did not have the bargain of the century. A pack of four 31g of Galaxy bubbles bar will set you back about £1.73p and a single 31g bar comes in at about 57p.
Galaxy chocolate is still not top of the tree from my point of view but the bar of Galaxy bubbles is lighter and less intensely sweet that the plain Galaxy bar. If I find it on offer again I may be tempted to buy it again but I will look for a further discounted price! Read the complete review |

Another chocolate bar....

This is a bit strange, but it looks like Mars are trying to do another version of Aero but piggy backing off its own Galaxy chocolate. It's a very good idea but in practice I don't think it has worked as well as it should. ... Normally Galaxy chocolate is so good because of its velvety texture. But when you start blowing bubbles into it, the experience is a bit confusing. The velvety texture is really soft and smooth and when you start putting bubbles into it, the texture is still the same but probably less smooth and velvety, it almost feels like something is just melting...
With Aero, it's good because you can actually feel the texture of the bubbles when you bite into it and it's very nibbly, and it's all down to using a different quality texture chocolate, something a bit firmer and less likely to melt. Whereas with the galaxy chocolate it's not a very 'structurally' stable material - it's melts more easily and so for me, bubbled Galaxy chocolate doesn't really do anything spectacular for me.
The chocolate still tastes the same good quality as the usual Galaxy bars, only the texture is a bit strange, particularly when you're expecting some sort of marked difference with this special version, and you can't help but keep comparing it to an Aero. The price is a lot more than it should be as well. It costs about 58p, which is a bit ridiculous, since it's a much smaller bar, with less chocolate, and I might as well stick to the normal Galaxy bar or go for the Aero instead.
It's worth a try for the novelty of it, and afterall, it's still a good Galaxy chocolate bar, only smaller and more expensive.
Thanks for reading.

Mars Galaxy Bubbles

Well, I am not a huge chocolate fan and do not consume much - perhaps about 1 bar a week, maybe less. However, I do like galaxy chocolate and its lovely, velvety smooth feel in the mouth.
I first tried one of these Galaxy Bubbles about two months ago. On first impresssion, I thought it was going to taste just like a normal ... bar of galaxy but as I snapped a piece off, I noticed the tiny bubble inside.
I put the first piece into my mouth and was met with the outer sides of the well known smooth feel of galaxy chocolate but on biting into the piece of joy, I was taken by surprise by how light it was compared to other chocolate bars. It simply melted in the mouth.
I could say it is like eating a cadbury wispa but it isn't. The experience is completely different.
Forget about the calories, if you think galaxy couldn't get much better, it just has. Go on treat yourself. I know I will be having a big one of these all to myself over the festive period. Read the complete review |
