Sainsbury's Basics Custard Cream Biscuits
by nicolap82
Having been brought up to shop in a manner that meant making savings on basic products could pay for the luxuries, I'm always on the look out for a bargain replacement product. I've always been a fan of a good custard cream with a glass of milk, so when I first spotted these a few months back I thought I'd give them a go. ...
The packaging is as you would expect from a Basics range product at Sainsbury's - white with bright orange writing. It can be a little annoying as the tear strip in the thin plastic wrapper does not go all the way round. This means that the top 6 biscuits are separated from the rest or can easily fall out if the loose section moves. The price is very reasonable, currently selling at 45p for a 400g packet. It's nearest rival on the website is currently selling for 95p.

Sadly, they are not the healthiest snack choice - but to be honest you don't pick up a custard cream if you're on a diet. Each biscuit contains 56 kcal - 2.8% of your daily allowance. This is fine if you can stick to one, but I rarely can.
I find that they stand up well compared to higher priced alternatives. The filling is more or less identical, and the biscuit is essentially the same. They are a little smaller, and are a little heavier and less crisp than some of their more expensive cousins, but are basically the same thing. They do seem to go soft a little quicker than some other custard creams, but to be honest a packet never lasts too long here anyway!
Most importantly, when dipped in a glass of cold make they go soft and delicious - my favourite way of enjoying a custard cream. Read the complete review |

Sainsbury's Oatmeal & Raisin Cookies
by Chippytarka
Anyone who knows me, will be aware of the fact I have and have always had a sweet tooth. Not just a sweet tooth, but a love for any form of carb such as cakes, biscuits, breads and cookies. These cookies, from Sainsburys, I bought today and they were half price costing 50p per pack which includes 5 cookies.
Why did ... I buy these?
As much as my own home baked cookies, in my opinion, are pretty good, myself and my kids really enjoy Sainsburys baked in store varieties. Im not a fan of them all, I much prefer the Taste the Difference White chocolate and raspberry, but these are still a firm favourite and cheaper with an extra cookie included!. With them costing only 50p a pack I had to pick up afew! We have had these numerous times so know exactly what to expect.
How are they packaged?
They come in a paper bag with a circular clear plastic window on the front. Right at the top there is the ' Sainsburys ' logo in small writing, underneath Bakery and then the actual product which is 5 oatmeal and raisin cookies. It states product is baked in store and contains British flour.
On the back it has the best before date, allergy advice and contact details for Sainsburys.
The colouring of the paper bag is orange and brown.
Ingredients
No listing on the packaging or website, just says they are suitable for vegetarians and contains artificial preservatives.
How do they look?
Not completely circular, which gives them a slight home baked feel. Each cookie has a diameter of between 3.5-4 inches. Lightly brown in colour, quite a dimpled look due to the oat content and afew raisins visible throughout.
How do they taste?
Lovely. I personally like my cookies to be soft and gooey, but still hold their shape. I like a slight doughy uncooked feel to it, especially the middle and this is what I get 8 out of 10 times with these cookies. The edges tend to be alittle crisp, and from there going into the middle the texture is soft. Slightly on the chewy side when eating, but the raisins and the oats give a good texture to it and substance.
I don't feel they are too sweet, but the balance is just right as the raisins provide quite abit of sweetness to them. I can taste some form of spice, maybe mixed spice, cinnamon etc so gives an added depth to it and makes the cookie more appealing for me.
Just the right amount of raisins and oats, doesn't feel or taste overpowering with ingredients and both elements really compliment each other and make a very filling snack.
No weird or unusual after taste once consumed. I tend to find eating two leaves me feeling very satisfied and anymore than that would make me feel alittle ill! I maybe greedy but not suicidal!
Would I buy again? Of course, especially at this price which is fantastic. Lovely tasting treat for me and the kids. One packet for us lasts roughly 30 minutes! Be warned. Read the complete review |
