      It's okay...

As some of you will have gathered from my reviews lately... I've been bridging out and trying different varieties of houmous. Each day at work I've been coming in with my pitta breads, Ryvitas and a different brand of houmous. This product is the latest twist on the traditional Greek dip to hit my shopping trolly - it's a mixture of chick pea and sesame seed paste with balsamic caramelised onions, lemon juice and garlic.

You will find this item (along with other houmouses) in the chilled aisle at your local Asda store. The houmous is contained in a plastic pot that comes in a burnt orange, yellow and brown sleeve with a picture of some caramelised onions on it. The sleeve also clearly states that the product is free from artificial colours and artificial flavours.

This item is priced at £1.00 -which is pretty reasonable.

      Sodium: 0.21g.

Ingredients: cooked chickpeas (51%) [chickpeas, water]; rapeseed oil (12%); water; sesame seed paste (10%); sweetened balsamic onion (10%) [onion; balsamic vinegar; muscovado sugar]; lemon juice (3.0%); garlic purée; salt.

Other nutritional information: This product is suitable for Vegetarians. It contains sesame seeds and may contain nuts and traces of other seeds.

      ********************* Taste ***********************

This product doesn't taste much different from the traditional houmous dip. However the taste of garlic and lemon juice is a lot more prominent in this product - it will certainly keep the vampires away.

The caromalised onion does add a nice kick to the dip and they are blended into the houmous so the consistency is even and the product is easy to spread.

My complaint about the traditional houmous is that it gets very repetitive very quickly and I have the same complaint with this product - the flavor becomes very bland very quickly. Another downfall is the fact that it's quite high in fact, it contains far too much garlic and it must be consumed with two days.

As I mentioned earlier - this dip is very reasonably priced at £1.00, however there are better houmous products out there.

      Three out of five stars.
