For my lovely boyfriends birthday I really wanted to get him a nice birthday cake. However after looking in supermarkets and the likes I was getting out priced after knowing I was taking him out for a meal and all the lovely gifts I had bought to spoil him with had almost wiped me out financially. However being 52 he hadn't had a birthday cake in years and I really wanted to surprise him with something and to dress it up with candles and to take photos and that and as his birthday was getting closer I was getting very agitated and even thought that in the end I would have to make a sponge or something lol. My daughter is a giant cake fan and she requested for her recent birthday a caterpillar cake like the ones I used to buy when she was a child. The caterpillar cake used to effectively be a large swish roll, it is chocolate with chocolate cream icing inside, rolled and then coated with diary chocolate to create an outer layer. It then has royal icing added to create a bit of colour, and a face on the end of the roll. It is now still the same except instead of the swish bit; the cake is simply cut in half and iced.
