Asda Egg Custard Tarts
Advantages: Taste delicious, can't fault it at all.
Disadvantages: Obviously gain more calories, still wish the price was 88p
When I was younger, my nan use to buy us a large egg custard from Firkins during her weekly shop with mum on a Friday. The whole egg custard would be demolished and eaten in within minutes. I would always be crafty and on the greedy side when it came to egg custards and cut a larger slice for myself and give my brother the slightly smaller piece, don't think he ever noticed else he would have complained. The only thing I hated about the Firkins egg custard was the skin on top would seem a bit burnt and the pastry edge would not be pleasant, maybe over cooked, only the actual egg custard filling being the best part.
Over a few years now, I tend to purchase my egg custards from ASDA, they use to cost 88p for four individual egg custards and now it costs £1.04. These are much better than the Firkins ones by far.
The four individual egg custards come in a yellow box with a picture of an egg custard cut in half. There is also a small window to show the actual egg custards inside the box. The dooyoo picture just doesn't do it justice, the actually egg custards look much more appealing.
The individual egg custard themselves look well presented and makes my mouth water. Golden shortcrust pastry deeply filled with light yellow egg custard topped with nutmeg. No appearance of skin on the egg custard it just looks so smooth on top.
I normally go round and bite the edge of the pastry off and then sink my teeth into the cool egg custard. The pastry is not over done and is just right, makes it pleasant to eat on its own. The egg custard is well flavoured with a hint of nutmeg, smooth, cold and firm texture and is totally yummy. I feel somewhat disappointed that I have finished eating it and crave another. I really can't fault these egg custards from ASDA, I definately recommend them, just hope the don't decide to do a new improved product, it really annoys me when they mess with a good product.
These egg custards are suitable for vegetarians, contains gluten, wheat, eggs, milk and may contain nuts (Really hate the "it may contains nuts" bit, it seems to be everywhere. Wish they would label food properly, either it does or it doesn't, guess they just covering themselves).
Summary: To me perfect egg custards.
