      A super delicious carrot cake.

Unfortunately I havn't been having much success with my diet for a while now but I'm still trying just a little bit. However, before my diet I was quite regularly buying Asda's Extra Special Carrot cake. I havn't bought it for a while, but me and my partner are currently on holiday in Somerset again and close to us is an Asda. We went out shopping yesterday and I wanted some goodies; so I specifically looked once again for this Carrot cake. We both love Carrot cake. What's odd is that it was my sister who first recommended I try carrot cake. I thought, at the time, that it would taste nasty; I couldn't imagine a cake could taste nice if it had carrots in it. In fact I thought it would taste vile! How wrong was I!

I have done a previous review on Weight watchers Carrot cake slices which are great...but now I have been naughty again I thought id do a review on Asda's amazing Carrot cake.

The cake comes in what I would call a posh box which is a purple colour. It looks like quality to me. This is a 'hand finished 'carrot cake. The box has a see through front so you can see the cake which looks appealing to eat. Asda describe it as ' moist sponge made with free range egg and grated carrot, layered and topped with soft cheese frosting'.

I will usually eat about 1/6 the of the cake in one go. there is plenty of the soft cheese topping and filling and as Asda state the cake is moist. It is just the right texture and where some cakes can be a bit too dry this one is not. There are plenty of tiny bits of carrot and you can also taste the flavours of cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger combined in the cake which creates an amazing taste.. I do recommend having a slice of this cake with a nice cup of tea.

      Icing sugar
      Wheat flour
      Vegetable oil
      Free range eggs
      Unsalted butter
      American style soft cheese (8%)
      Carrots (5%)
      Dark brown sugar
      Humectant (Glycerol)
      Concentrated orange juice
      Glucose syrup
      Raising agents (Sodium bicarbonate, Diphosphates)
      Preservative (Potassium sorbate)
Emulsifiers (Sodium stearoyl-2-lactylate, Mono and Diglycerides of fatty acids)
Mixed spice (Coriander, Cinnamon, Ginger, Nutmeg, Fennel, Cloces, Cardamon)
      Soft cheese Frosting (35%)

This cake is full of calories so I certainly cannot describe it as being healthy , but I am judging this cake on its taste. One sixth of the cake (which is what I usually have) has 281 kcals in it.

You can currently buy this superb carrot cake for £1.98 at Asda. I think the price is reasonable; especially if you think about how much you might pay just for one slice of a similar quality cake in cafes/restaurants.

If you have never tried this cake I highly recommend you do! In my view because of the sheer delight in taste, this cake deserves the full 5 star rating.

        Nice quality cake!

When my boyfriend comes to see me (we have a long distance relationship at the moment) I always do stock up with cakes, biscuits and chocolate. He has a real bad sweet tooth and sadly lives on junk food. I am rather the opposite really and so when it comes to purchasing things for him I have limited knowledge and just take pot luck with things such as this and seeing as it was on special offer when I bought it and it was called 'Extra Special' I thought we should give it a go!

        The Packaging:

The cake comes in dark blue box with a 'window' on the top of it which you can see the cake through. On the front of the box I am told that it is Asda 'Extra Special' Hand Finished Carrot Cake and that it contains no artificial colours, flavours or hydrogenated fat and that it is suitable for Vegetarians and the best before date is clearly stamped on there. Other information listed on the box includes being told a bit about the product, ingredients and allergy advice is given along with storage advice and a full nutritional rundown chart, there are photographs of slices of the cake on there and contact details for Asda are given. Nice enough box and of course it is informative as it needs to be.

        The Cake:

On the box we are told that it is 'Moist sponge made with free-range eggs and grated carrot, layered and topped with full fat soft cheese frosting and hand finished with cinnamon'.

What you get is a round brown colour 2 layered sponge cake, filled with a light creamy looking off white mixture and topped with lashings of moist and soft icing with a sprinkle of cinnamon all over it.

The cakes should feed 6 according to the information on the box but I find it gives 4 good portions better. The sponge is moist, you can taste and feel the grated carrot and its not too sweet at all. I struggled to taste any sort of cream cheese filling though because the topping really is like eating pure smooth sugar...not that, that is a complaint because we all found that the sweetness perfectly complimented the plainer sponge. What I also liked is that although we could see the cinnamon sprinkled evenly all over the cake that it wasn't a harsh taste but really went really nice with the carrot flavouring.

All in all I think this is a rather nice cake. It looks nice, is of good size and appears hand finished (as it is). It is really sweet mind but if you like a really fine quality carrot cake, then really....you don't have to look any further really and my boyfriend loved this!

        Nutritional Information Per 1/6 Cake:

        Energy: 281Kcal
        Protein: 2.7g
        Carbohydrate: 33.8g
        of which sugars: 23.9g
        Fat: 14.7g
        of which saturates: 4.3g
        Fibre: 1.1g
        Sodium: 0.13g
        equivalent as salt: 0.3g

Only available in Asda and I paid £1.50 for this but the usual price of this is £3.00 a cake.
