      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      Not for me.

      Recently I have tried a number of Asda's houmous-based products. I find original houmous dips quite bland and repetitive, so I have been trying products that add extra flavours to tradition chick pea and sesame seed dip.

      I spotted this Jalapeño Houmous in the chilled section of my local Asda store. The plastic pot had a red and yellow cardboard sleeve around it with a picture of some jalapeño peppers. I eat quite a lot of spicy food and the packaging said that the heat strength of this product was medium, so I was sure I'd like it. The packaging also clearly states that the product is free from artificial colours and artificial flavours.

      I was impressed because this product is priced at £1 for a 200g tub, in other supermarkets you usually pay more than £1 for this type of item, so it seemed like a bargain.

      When you first open the houmous tub you will find that the jalapeño smell hits you instantly. The dip has a good consistency - it isn't too runny and it is very easy to spread.

      *************** Nutritional Information ********************

      Per 1/2 pot (100g):

      Energy: 157 cal;
      Protein: 7.6g;
      Carbohydrate: 15.0g; (of which are sugars: 5.2g);
      Fat: 7.5g; (of which are saturates: 3.6g);
      Fibre: 1.6g;
      Sodium: 0.21g.

      Ingredients: cooked chickpeas (41%) [chickpeas, water); rapeseed oil (23%); sesame seed paste (11%); water; green jalapeño peppers (5.2%) [jalepeño pepper, water, spirit vinegar, salt, bay, cinnamon, clove]; red jalapeño pepper (5.2%) [jalapeño pepper, water, sugarcane vinegar, salt, calcium chloride]; concentrated lemon juice (4.1%); garlic granules; salt.

      Other nutritional information: This product is suitable for vegetarians, it may contain nuts, sesame seeds / other seeds.

      *************** Taste ***************

      When I first tasted this product on a piece of pitta bread I was rather surprised... it blew my head off! I usually find that by adding additional flavours a traditional houmous recipe, the dip is complimented, but not on this occasion... I could hardly taste the houmous dip, just the jalapenos. As I explained earlier, I do like hot food, but this certainly isn't a medium tasting spice.

      The other disadvantage to this product is that once you have opened it you have to keep refrigerated and eat it within two days.

      Although I do think that £1.00 is a good price, I won't be buying this again. Personally I don't think that the jalapeño taste compliments houmous so I can only award it two stars.

        Yummy houmous with a twist!

        When it comes to houmous I love the stuff but much to my surprise my mate who I'm staying with at the moment had never tasted it so when I spotted this knowing that she loves hot and spicy foods I couldn't resist grabbing us a pot along with some tortillas!

        The Packaging:

        Clear plastic round tub with a brownish coloured cardboard sleeve that slides on and off it with ease. On the front of the sleeve I'm told that it is Asda Jalapeño Houmous 'With hot red and green jalapeño peppers' and that it is medium in hotness and 200g in size, that it is suitable for Vegetarians and contains no artificial colours, flavours or hydrogenated fat and the best before date is clearly stated. Other information on the back of the sleeve includes being told a bit about the product, ingredients and allergy advice is stated, a full nutritional rundown chart is displayed, storage details are also given and contact details for Asda are listed. Nice enough packaging this is and very little of it too!

        The Houmous:

        A light pink in colour as soon as you take the lid off you get a smell of garlic. The houmous itself is a nice thick paste and easy to deal with too!

        Taste wise this is great if you like houmous with a kick! The chickpeas are well cooked and not mushy at all but have body and bite. The garlic is hefty and well blended along with tasting and seeing tiny flecks of green and red chilli's. The whole thing is superbly blended and seasoned and also contains other spices such as cinnamon, cumin and coriander which gives depths to the overall flavour.

        Great on crackers, crisps and anything that takes your fancy this houmous is packed with flavour and is exceptional quality. Once opened we found it to stay fresh in the fridge for three days and thoroughly enjoyed it. Just make sure you like it hot!
