Lovely tea time classic for us on a budget!

When my boyfriend comes to stay I do like to have a mid afternoon cuppa with him and A piece of cake or some biscuits or something naughty but nice. Its just one of those bad habits I have picked up from him since we have been together as he has a really, really bad sweet tooth!

Constantly I look for bargains to tempt him with as I'm on a budget and this costing only £1.00 per sponge cake I thought was worth the money for something endorsed on the front of it as 'Chosen By You'.

      The Packaging:

The sponge cake comes in a dark pink cardboard box and on the front of that there is a photograph of the sponge on there and we are told that it is Asda 'Chosen By You', Teatime Classic Raspberry Sponge 'Light sponge sandwiched with buttercream and raspberry jam, finished with a sugar dusting' and that it us suitable for Vegetarians. Other information listed on the other sides of the box includes ingredients and allergy advice being given, there is a full nutritional chart stated, storage advice is also given and contact details for Asda are also listed. Inside the 'sandwich' is secured within a see-through plastic bag type thing that is easy to pull open though not so easy to reseal (so have something on standby to pop this into if not eating the whole thing!).

      The Sandwich Itself:

Round and of thick depth on the back of the box I am told that this should give 6 servings though me, my boyfriend and flatmate all polished this off mega quick leaving not so much as a crumb!

What you get is a sandwich of two round, moist light golden coloured sponges which are not too messy to eat as they don't crumble to much and is nicely sweetened though not overly so as the top of the sponge does have a white light dusting of a powdery sugar to it. To encase the two sponges securely together you get a thick layer of very thick whitish in colour buttercream which really is buttery though not greasy in taste and then a dark layer of raspberry jam which I think is seedless as we never found any seeds within this at all and the flavour was very sweet and fruity though there wasn't too much jam within it to make it sickly or anything like that.

The whole of the sponge was lovely, light and very flavoursome and for the money I was surprised at how nice it really was however the jam although tasty and sweet and very fruity either didn't really taste of raspberries or that flavour did get overpowered by the buttercream....we couldn't decide which.

A pleasant sponge cake though that is easy to cut and serve and look nice and I wouldn't hesitate in purchasing this time and time again in the future!
