Advantages: Flavoursome, reasonably priced

Disadvantages: Short shelf life when opened

I love houmous and have made it several times at home the only problem with this is that I end up with loads and give it away to family and friends even friends of friends as I make too much to be able to eat my way through. So I frequently try shops own brands of houmous to fill my craving.

I hadn't tried the asda reduced fat houmous so thought I would give it a try. It currently costs 88p or is part of the 2 dips for £1.50. so I thought if its not great it hasn't cost that much. It comes in a 200g plastic tub with a cardboard sleeve on the outside of the tub.

For those of you who don't know what houmous is, its a greek dip thats made out of chick peas, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and sesame paste and can be used to dip things in like sliced carrots or put inside pitta breads as an alternative to sandwiches.

This houmous had a reasonable shelf life on it but it does recommend that once opened it is consumed with 2 days and is kept in the fridge. So once you have opened it, it doesn't have a long shelf life.

When you open the lid you can clearly smell the garlic but don't let this put you off as the taste is not overpowering, though you might need some chewing gum handy if you are with people who aren't keen on the smell.

The houmous itself is a nice consistency and has small bits of chickpeas still in the dip. If you prefer dips which are smooth then this isn't for you. When you taste the houmous you can clearly taste the garlic, lemon and sesame in the dip and it does have a nice consistency. The one thing that I found was that as I was the only one eating this and no wanting to waste food it did become a bit much after a while having this layered thickly on a couple of pitta breads.

Shop bought houmous isn't low in fat even the low fat ones but as its not something I have very often I'm not overly concerned about it. This one has 130kcal per 50g and 9.5g of fat of which 1.2g of fat is saturated.

Overall I would recommend this but if you are having this on your own due to the shelf life you could find yourself throwing a bit of it away. Then again its better than making a loads of homemade houmous and I would go get this again if I want some houmous.

Summary: Tasty houmous and a good alternative to homemade
