Advantages: Taste lovely & Great value price..!
Disadvantages: They seem to break very easily...
I often buy a variety of biscuits and snacks for my household as I do enjoy indulging my sweet tooth most days, with my other half being more of an 'occasional indulger'. One biscuit that my other half absolutely loves however, is that childhood favourite, Bourbon Creams.
Due to his liking for these biscuits, we have tried out several different brands and varieties over the years, with the most recent purchase being from the well-known budget brand from the Asda range, known as "Smartprice". Costing a mere 23 pence for a package of Smartprice Bourbon Cream biscuits that is 200g in size, I couldn't see any reason for not giving them a try out recently and with that, they went into my 'virtual' trolley whilst shopping online at www.asda.com.
When the biscuits arrived with the rest of my grocery shopping, I must admit that I was fairly nonplussed about the basic looking packaging. A plain white wrapper with the familiar bright green-coloured font printed on it encased the biscuits within. The wrapper seemed to be very flimsy and really quite thin. I was not at all surprised at the basic look of the packaging as I am very familiar with the Asda Smartprice brand due to buying many products from this budget brand on a regular basis, and so have become accustomed to the cheap-and-cheerful look that most - if not all - of the products in the range have.
Not one to be put off by such matters however, we opened the package of biscuits with our evening cuppa the following night and the first thing that struck me about the Smartprice Bourbon Cream biscuits was their size. They were much thinner and slightly more oblong than other brands that I have bought recently, which tend to be slightly thicker and well, more square in shape. The other thing that I noticed as I removed a biscuit from the wrapper, was the familiar chocolate-like smell that was evident straight away. I was pleased that they smelled like I had expected them to and I though the aroma was very sweet.
Biting into the Smartprice Bourbon Creams has proven to be quite an enjoyable experience, if the empty wrapper is anything to go by! The biscuits - for those of you who have not come across them before - are a sort of 'layer' or 'sandwich' design, with the centre layer being a soft fondant-type cream, being sandwiched between two chocolate flavoured biscuits. There is no actual chocolate on the biscuits, so they won't melt or anything, but they have a sort of chocolate flavour to them.
I found that the biscuit layers on the outsides of the Smartprice Bourbon Creams were quite delicious and had a lovely flavour that was neither sickly or overly sweet, which is something I have found with very cheap biscuits that I have bought before, so I was pleased that these biscuits seemed to have a gentler flavour to them. The cream or fondant in the centre was quite thick, and I thought there was a reasonably-sized helping of fondant centre to compliment the outer biscuits perfectly. I have found that cheaper 'sandwich' type biscuits such as these ones can often have a rather meagre portion of cream/fondant in the centre which can result in the biscuit being quite dry when eating it, but in the case of the Smartprice offerings, this was not the case at all.
I thought too that the outer biscuits had a very pleasant crunch to them and they gave the biscuit quite a crunchy texture without being too hard. The chocolate flavour was really quite sweet although I didn't find it took anything from the fondant centre of the biscuits.
The only thing I would say that is at all negative is that I found the Smartprice Bourbon Creams got broken very easily. In fact, I would go so far as to say that the majority of biscuits I removed from the package were actually broken in some shape or form. More often than not, a small piece of one of the outer biscuits had come off, and the damage was fairly minor. It was, however, definitely something that I found was quite noticeable, and it is not something that I have found is a particular trait of Bourbon Cream biscuits in general. Certainly, other brands have not brought this little flaw to my attention. Don't get me wrong, it didn't stop me from enjoying eating the biscuits or take anything from their taste or flavour, but it certainly would have prevented me from putting the biscuits onto one my pretty china plates if I had a guest over for tea. The broken corners gave the biscuits an overall sort of 'shabby' look and for this, I will be deducting one star from the product rating.
For me and my hubby however, these little biccies have proven to be quite a hit and I will definitely be buying them again! I have thoroughly enjoyed dipping them into my evening cuppa and I think they are a tasty little addition for kids parties or a little treat to pop into lunch boxes. Their slender size and thin design would make them ideal for this!
The nutritional information on the packaging informs me that each biscuit will provide 2.5g fat and 58 kcal. They are suitable for a vegetarian diet. The Bourbon Creams may contain nuts.
I would wholeheartedly recommend these little biscuits and I will definitely buy them again!
Summary: Will buy them again & I recommend them..!
