Asda Smart Price Custard Creams
Advantages: Great value for money
Disadvantages: The biscuits don't always stay stuck together
Asda, like the majority of supermarkets these days, has a budget range of products which it calls 'Asda Smart Price'. The range is cheap and sometimes offers excellent value for money and sometimes appalling value for money. Thankfully, as we are a high biscuit consumption household (as some of you may know by now), the Smart Price Custard Cream Biscuits fall into the earlier category, and are a steal at 30p for 400g.
Asda Smart Price products are easy to find (only in Asda mind you), being packaged in very plain green and white packaging, with the words 'Asda Smart Price' clearly identifiable. There's no hiding the fact that the Smart Price Custard Creams are a budget product, and for those with the fear of being caught going 'cheap', they are advised to remove the packaging at the earliest opportunity.
Upon opening these biscuits, the second clue for you that these are not a premium product (in the unlikely event that the packaging hasn't actually given it away) is that there is no 'easy to open' tab. I personally find this to be a minor inconvenience, but like most biscuit lovers I do have my ways and means of entering a packet of biscuits quickly and without fuss (and especially a packet of custard creams) and so am more than happy to accommodate this slight inconvenience.
Once into the packet, you are greeted with the sweet, vanilla aroma of the custard cream and certainly on scent alone, all evidence of it being a budget product ceases to exist. The biscuits are rectangular in shape and come in pairs which are cemented together with a firm vanilla flavoured custard cream. In my experience this cream holds the biscuits together okay, but not as well as premium brands, and certainly I've experienced some ill treated packets in the past where many a biscuit has lost its' partner. This is obviously not ideal if hoards of half custard cream biscuits without their custard find themselves lost in your biscuit barrel but as I said earlier, we are a high biscuit consumption family and this consumption rate increases dramatically where custard creams are concerned and so I find it very rare for these bisucits to be long out of the packat and therefore to lose their better half and so personally am happy to put up with this slight inconvenience for the sake of saving quite a few pennies over the premium brands. For some, however, this may be an issue, and as such these poor biscuits have lost one of their stars!
So for smell these bisucits score highly, and when complete, these biscuits score well for appearance too, but do they taste any good?
Custard Cream biscuits are not renowned for being overly crunchy, and certainly this brand if anything, errs towards the slightly softer end of the crunch scale, but satisfying none-the-less. Following the crunch, ones' taste buds are hit with the sweetness of the biscuit and then the sweetness and creaminess of the cream... mmmm.... if you like something sweet then this is for you. Yes the Smart Price Custard Creams pass the taste test.... and unfortunately for some, the addictivity test. A definite downside to these biscuits is that one is never enough but with only 61 calories per biscuit and priced at a little over 1p per biscuit, you can definitely afford to have more than one!
So to conclude I would definitely recommend these biscuits and I give them 4 stars! This is an excellent value for money product and simply scrummy although the custard cream biscuits separating loses them one star.
If thinking of giving these biscuits a try, as Asda operate a 'try me, love me' policy on all their products, so should you find that you're not 100% happy with the biscuits, they will offer a refund and replacement service. With this in mind, I would say give them a try as you've nothing to lose!
Thanks for reading my review, I hope you liked it :-)
