Advantages: Super cheap and tastes the same as the leading brand

Disadvantages: Not easily located in my local store

So, these cost 30p for 400g - cheap but about the going rate for a budget packet of digestives. So why am I writing a review on them? They actually are rather good.

I have two uses for digestive biscuits - dunking and desserts.

Firstly, my dunking habits - ever since I was a child I have loved McVities Digestive biscuits and having tried many other cheaper alternatives down the years I became fully convinced that any less than McVities digestives with a cup of tea was just a waste. I either found every other version just too sweet or not sweet enough, never achieving that balance that a McVities biscuit did.

Onto my other use of the humble digestive biscuit - in desserts. I regularly make a lemon cheesecake and a chocolate lime pie, both of which call for the use of rather a lot of these biscuits in the base and for this job I usually do buy a cheaper brand as even I am unable to taste the difference in the finished product.

I'm the middle of making the lime pie using a pack of asda smart price biscuits I had a cup of tea and with nothing else in the house to satisfy my sweet tooth I had a smart price digestive and it was lovely. Even after 20 odd years of dunking the McVitie variety I couldn't tell the difference.

These are everything I want from a digestive - the same thickness as the leading brand, so I don't feel short changed leading to the need for just one or two more. Not too sweet, yet sweet enough. On the dunking front they also score very highly, they don't just disintegrate into the bottom of the cup like so many others do.

The only disadvantage is that with so many of the value ranges they are not as easy to find on the shelf as the bigger brands and in fact in my local Asda they are not even located in the same place as the other digestives and are infact about another 20meters further down. But, seek and you shall find- the packaging is very plain in the uniform white and green smart price branding.

So give thm a go if you see them - Happy Shopping (and hopefully saving with these)

Summary: After 20 years of McVities I now by these by chance
