Advantages: Taste okay, crunchy outer keeps butter in.

Disadvantages: Look they have been squashed, more crunchiness than softness :(

I did part of my weekly shop at Asda last week as I was passing one and I like Asda a lot. As I was in need of crumpets and I enjoyed the Sainsbury's own brand ones that I had, I picked up a pack of Asda Smartprice Crumpets x 6 for 35p.

They come in a very plain see through plastic wrapper that has the label printed onto it. The front label is green and white, just like the rest of the Smartprice range, and contains just the name of the product. The rear of the pack has all of the product information on it. Each crumpet is quiet reasonably sized, at 1cm thick and 8cm in diameter, however compared to more expensive crumpets, it looks like they have been squashed! They are noticeably thinner than other brands.

Once toasted, the crumpets have a crunchy outside and a soft a squidgy inner with a nice golden brown colour all over. I have found that these crumpets tend to be crunchier than similarly priced alternates from other supermarkets. I'm not too keen on this as this results in there being less of the soft inner texture which I like a lot. One advantage to them being crunchier is that they retain melted butter a lot better as I have found it doesn't run out as quickly in comparison to other brands. Like other crumpets, I do find these a good accompaniment to my breakfast meal as they help to keep me full till lunchtime.

On the whole these crumpets were okay but I don't think I will be buying them again as for a similar price you can buy branded or better quality own brand products from other supermarkets. The price is similar to what I have paid in Sainsburys for crumpets of much better taste and quality.

Health wise, they contain a similar amount of ingredients to others that I have bought, but in my opinion, they should still try and get rid of the preservatives. Typical nutritional content per 2 crumpets is: 129 calories, 1.1g sugar, 0.9g fat and 0.8g of salt. On the whole they are not too bad and make a great start to your day!

I am going to give these 3/5 as they are okay on the whole, but there are little things that I am not too keen on, such as the texture and the depth of each crumpet. If I had no other choice then I would buy them, but as I have found others for a similar price that look a lot nicer, then I will give these a miss.

Thanks for reading.

Summary: An okay crumpet but as Asda is out of my way I won't be going to buy them in a hurry.
