At least give them a go, in moderation!

I'm not one for sweet things generally, biscuits I can take or leave and most biscuits I can only manage 2 maximum before I'm all sugared out but recently in Morrisons they've had an offer on Boland's Lemon Puffs where you get 2 packets (200g each) for a £1. Normally these are only about 59p a packet but the offer prompted me to buy a couple of packets. There appears to be about 20 biscuits in a pack.

The lemon puffs come in a bright yellow packet which makes you think of lemons and they are described as a "traditional puff pastry biscuit sandwiched with a light lemon flavoured cream filling". They sounded too good to resist.

The biscuits themselves are indeed puff pastry and melt in the mouth without being overly sweet, they do have a light coating of what I think is glazed sugar on the outside to make them slightly sweeter than they would be because puff pastry isn't that sweet. The lemon cream filling is a bright yellow and fairly solid so the biscuits don't come apart easily. It tastes of tangy lemon and the bitterness of lemon flavour coupled with the not too sweet puff pastry biscuits makes these a biscuit I can manage several of!

The bad news is they are very high in fat. Per biscuit the nutritional statistics are: 68 calories, 0.8g protein, 8.4g carbohydrate of which 2.4g sugars, 3.5g fat of which 1.8g saturates, 0.3g fibre and 0.1g salt. As you can see the fact they are not particularly sweet doesn't mean they are better for you than other biscuits and the amount of fat in one of these shocked me! Especially as I'd eaten about 4 by the time I read the packet!

They are very tasty though and if you don't go for sickly sweet biscuits these are a refreshing change. I doubt children would like them much as they aren't sweet enough but for adults they provide a lovely, crumbly, lemony biscuit that just satisfies a sweet craving but doesn't drown it. The puff pastry crumbles and breaks as you bite into these biscuits and they can get a bit messy but the lemon cream holds its own and is a firm but tasty centre to the biscuits. Perfect with a cup of tea or just on their own for a quick snack.

I recommend these to anyone who likes lemon flavoured items and anyone who doesn't like too much sweetness to their biscuits. Just remember as you shovel them down they aren't any better for you! Get them now while they're on offer! I'm giving them 4 stars, it would have been 5 if they weren't so full of fat but I have to deduct a star for how bad they are for you sadly. Gorgeous lemon flavoured biscuits though, try them.
