A lovely mallow teacake snack from Burton's.

I often hold a family get-together at my house and invite immediate family to join us for a bit of a lunch/gathering. This means that I buy a lot of different snacks and party-food items to feed my guests. One item that I always buy for occasions such as this is the package of 'Burtons Jam Teacakes' which are always a popular choice with my guests. Packaged in an easily-recognisable gold foil package, the Jam Teacakes are supplied in a generously sized (250g) pack containing 20 individual teacakes. I understand that the Teacakes are available to buy from grocery stores as well as some supermarkets such as Sainsbury's. I usually buy mine from a local independent grocery store and pay only £1 for the pack which I think is a really great value price. From the well-known manufacturers of those famous 'Jammy Dodgers', Burtons have, it seems, put a lot of effort into producing these little teacakes. First of all, the packaging is fairly eye-catching, but what impresses me most about it is the addition of a little plastic tray or shelf inside the foil wrapper, meaning that each of the delicate mallow teacakes has its own little space to nestle in. As the teacakes only ever appear to be in near-mint condition when I remove them from their foil enclosure, I'd guess that the plastic inner tray serves it purpose perfectly, preventing the teacakes from bumping into each other or becoming damaged due to their delicate make-up. Secondly, the teacakes themselves not only look appetising and appealing, but their taste is quite delicious and I find that they are of surprisingly high quality. (It's only surprising because of the super value price). Nestled on a circular 'bed' of crunchy biscuit base is the perfectly rounded mallow teacake, which is similar in texture and consistency to a regular marshmallow, rather than being a 'whipped' mallow or teacake such as the Tunnock's variety. This is merely an observation, not a criticism, and I find the texture gives a bit of 'bite' to the snack whilst being perfectly sweet and delicious. The mallow centre of each teacake is encased in yummy milk chocolate which is deliciously sweet and not at all bitter. The addition of a generous 'blob' of deliciously smooth and sweet red jam in the centre of each teacake only adds to the overall taste, whilst adding something soft to the chewy texture of the mallows themselves. Genius! The Burtons Jam Teacakes smell delicious and very sweet as soon as the package is opened and I start to display them on a pretty stand with other cakes and biscuits. They look very attractive on the plate and their neat size means that they fit on my cake stand perfectly. I find that the Burtons Teacakes are not at all sickly or overly-sweet. The milk chocolate that coats the mallow centre is quite thin in its consistency but this doesn't take anything from the texture or taste of the teacakes overall. I also think that the jam in the centre of the teacakes is absolutely delicious and I find it quite moreish, which usually results in me struggling to eat only one teacake at a time. (I can justify this to myself because they are so small and neatly-sized! To give you an idea of their size, I find that they sit comfortably on top of Jaffa cakes on my cake stand.) I can see from the foil packaging that each of the little teacakes contains 2.4g of fat and 57 kcal which in my opinion is on a par with many of the other biscuits, cakes and snacks that I buy regularly. The Burtons Jam Teacakes are not suitable for certain food allergies as they may contain nuts and they contain wheat, gluten, milk and soya. In addition, they are not suitable for a vegetarian diet as they contain gelatine. I would highly recommend the Burtons Jam Teacakes and will continue to buy them for our family get-togethers. They are brilliant value for money and are always a popular choice with our guests due to their gorgeous taste and great quality. There is a website for the brand at www.burtonsfoods.com.
