Advantages: Tastes Okay, Handy, Protein Fix
Disadvantages: Bread Tasting Crisp Sticks?
I tried these Dairylea Dunkers Jumbo Tubes for the first time just recently, and was surprised at how much I like them. I'd considered them a children's food, which is of course who they're aimed at, and had just previously assumed that meant I wouldn't like them. Bit of a silly logic really?!
These are sold in shops individually for ridiculous prices (around 80p to £1 each from what I've seen), but in supermarkets they're more reasonably priced at around £1.50 - £2 for a packet of four. These multipacks contain four individually sealed packets, which makes them an ideal snack to grab when you're in a hurry. I bet they're good for kid's lunchboxes too - no fuss or mess and no washing up afterwards! Not so great for the environment but you can't win them all.
These Dunkers open up by peeling back the foil lid on top to reveal two plastic compartments. There's a long one which holds the jumbo dunker tubes in it, and then a small one with the Dairylea cheese spread in it. The idea, of course, is that you dunk your crunchy dunkers into the cheese spread to eat them. Works well for me!
I don't really know how to describe these jumbo dunker tubes, as they're not even sure what they are I don't think. They look and feel a bit like a giant crisp stick with a hollow running through the middle, yet they taste more like a bread stick. The cheese is typical Dairylea - very creamy, sweet and with a slightly tangy edge to it.
My verdict on these is a mixed one. On the one hand, these are expensive and not even that fabulous tasting. I was surprised to find such a bread taste to the crisp-looking things. Think I'd have preferred breadsticks that don't fool my senses. They are pretty convenient though, and a big hit with the grandson too. Plus I like that you're getting a good dose of protein into your kids with these, which you'd be missing out on if you just handed over a packet of crisps.
I'm going to sit on the fence and give them three stars. They're overpriced and could do with a bit of a taste-tweak, but they're reasonable and handy too. In fairness, I'm not exactly the target demographic to be eating these - kids are.
