      Red Jalapeños

I love making Mexican food and in my opinion, the spicier the better. I love all the bold flavours and hotness that goes with a good quality authentic meal and in my opinion the best way to achieve this is to add your own peppers, chillies and spices. One of my favourite Mexican spices is the jalapeños (pronounced halapeno).

So, what exactly is a jalapeños? Well, according to an article I read, "The jalapeño is a medium-sized chili pepper. A mature jalapeño fruit is 2-3½ inches (5-9 cm) long and is commonly picked and consumed while still green, but occasionally it is allowed to fully ripen and turn crimson red. I would describe a jalapeños as a smaller version of the green or in this case red pepper although they are a lot sweeter and a lot hotter than regular peppers. They add a fire to my Mexican creations that I absolutely love but do beware as a small one goes a long way in terms of heat so you only really need a small amount to flavour your dishes with.

Now, you can buy fresh jalapeños in the supermarket but I only really need one or two at a time and so find it a lot easier and a lot more cost effective to just buy a big glass jar as then I can use as many as I want and store them safely and I find them a lot easier to use in my recipes as they are all ready chopped up and prepared and I don't have to chop them myself. I had a little incident once when I chopped a jalapeño and then had to take my contact lens out. I had washed my hands but the hotness of them was obviously very strong and my eye stung like ***** and watered for the rest of the evening, not fun I can tell you!

These red jalapeños come in a glass jar with a lid that screws on and off so you can reseal it again which is great. They are in a water/juice that keeps them fresh and they are chopped but still have some of the seeds on them to give them a real fiery taste. I find them crisp, hot and lovely to eat. It says on the jar that once they are opened you need to refrigerate after opening and use within 14 days. Store in a cool dry place & away from direct sunlight. I make quite a few mexican meals a week so get through quite a bit of the jar although I never finish it but I do think its good value at just £1.29 for a 200ml jar.

So, what do I use them in. They are brilliant in a quesadilla and add a bit of crunch to an otherwise quite plain dish. They are great on top of a lovely Mexican flavoured pizza I make too and make a change from Pepperoni or pineapple or something like that.

The ingredients are listed on the jar as: Jalapeño Peppers, Water, Sugar, Spirit Vinegar, Salt, Citric Acid, Preservative (Sodium Benzoate), Firming Agent (Calcium Chloride), Herbs & Spices. They are suitable for vegetarians and are free from gluten and free from wheat so they really are fairly edible for most. A lovely Mexican ingredient I recommend.

        A great food!

I love hot and I love spicy and I eat fajitas rather alot. Because of this when I spotted these jalapeños in a jar that I hadn't seen before and from a brand I trust I couldn't resist buying them to try out one night!

        The Packaging:

200g glass see-through jar that has a black screw on/off lid to the top of it. Around the jar if has a red label on there and on the front of that I'm told that they are Mexican Discovery 'More adventurous tastes', Red Jalapeños and that they are hot & sweet. Other information on the back and the sides of the label includes a bit of information about the product, ingredients are listed as is full nutritional information and contact details for Discovery are given. It's a nice enough informative jar this to be fair to.

        The Jalapeños:

These are red, hot peppers in slices that are pickled in spirit vinegar. Alot of the seeds from the jalapeños sink to the bottom and that is it really, they are natural peppers pickled!

Taste wise these are soft and squidgy and rather juicy. Sure you cam taste the vinegar rather alot but that goes rather well with the hotness really making them taste tangy and sharp. The jalapeños though are very hot in flavour and juicy and great to use in recipes and on top of foods.

They look appetising and are tangy and well seasoned and all round a great jar of jalapeños that can be store in the fridge for up to 14 days from opening them!
