I don't know how I heard about Genius Bread, but when I tried it I loved it - so did my daughter, who's 13 years old and also gluten intolerant.

My personal Gluten / Wheat Free journey started back in December 2007 when I ended up having an anaphylaxis to it!! I'd ignored months of signs from my body saying "stop filling me up with gluten / wheat!"

What started out with water blister type rashes on my knees / shoulders / elbows (I now know to be Dermatitis Herpetiformis - the skin manifestation of Coeliac Disease), then breathlessness whenever I ate a spam muffin - gross I know - but being a busy Theatre Recovery Nurse - you grabbed what you could - when you could!

Frequent visits to the doctors surgery didn't give me any conclusive diagnosis - varying treatments for skin ailments, anti histimines you name it - I tried it! So, on the evening of the 5th December 2007 after enjoying a huge bowful of homemade (from scratch) spaghetti bolognaise, garlic bread - you know - the works!!!

I woke up in A+E of the hospital I worked in! No idea how I'd got there - just a mess!! What with the blister rash on my body, and my body huge and swollen with an urticarial rash + coupled with not being able to breathe properly and I itched beyond BELIEF.... how scary was that?!

I was hooked upto monitors, had blood tests, x-rays, scans, injections, IVI fluids, Oxygen, I was even pronounced - poorly by the A+E doctor!

However - to cut a long story short - I was eventually diagnosed as being hyper allergic to Wheat / gluten etc.. I believe I grieved! No more luscious crusty loaves, deep steaming bowls of spaghetti, pizza's, sandwiches with my favourite fillings!!

When released from the confines of my prison (sorry - Hospital bed) my mum took me shopping for gluten free products - there were biscuits, some cereals and when it came to bread - well I dissolved - no fluffy muffins to make a bacon butty, no well risen loaf to make a sarny with, they were squat and solid, they'd even give a brick a good run for their money (harsh but true) then Genius, a normal mum of a young lad who suffered a wheat and gluten intolerence had developed a loaf.

Not a 'normal' loaf you see - but one that tasted, felt, even squeezed like 'normal' bread. Rose like 'normal' bread, had a texture of 'normal' bread, it even freezes like 'normal' bread . Well I was hooked, I bought 4 loaves! It's expensive - £2.49 a throw - but I bought it when it was new in the shops so saved a shedload of 'dough' (please pardon the pun).

Genius have a great website and I registered and logged in - and too my amazement found that it was applying to be allowed to be prescribed - I went to my doctors - armed with information about the Genius loaf and asked that he prescribe it for me.

Genius had to go through special procedures to be allowed prescription rights - but my GP managed to get it prescribed for me - I get 6 loaves every time I ask for it on prescription - so what would cost £14.94 costs me the price of a prescription. If you slice it before freezing - you can take out what you need and store the rest until you need it, so it is really economical and lasts longer.

The bread makes fantastic bread crumbs. At Christmas I made proper Sage and Onion Stuffing and Chestnut Stuffing!! I've even made Genius bread and butter pudding.

So now I'll stop waxing lyrical about it (but I do like the new adverts that are out now) a pure sign of Genius!
