When a colleague of mine recently asked me if I wanted a bit of her twinkie, I thought it all sounded rather untoward, the colleague in question had just spent a month in Hawaii and had stocked up on weird and wonderful US food products.
Twinkies are made by the company "Hostess" and could be considered a sweet equivalent of Spam in that they are long-lasting and not very good for you nutritionally!
A simple snack, the twinkie is basically just a very moist type of sponge with vanilla cream inside, it came in very straight-forward plastic packaging without advertising of any kind (although they may have been in a bigger box and I wasn't aware of it), when I tried it for the first time I was told that it has a virtually limitless shelf-life, I'm not sure whether that's true or not - Wikipedia says it isn't at the moment but that's not necessarily the truth either.
Overall, I was very impressed with this basic but yummy snack and think it's a good alternative to chocolate, by the time it's travelled from the US to Europe, it's probably not worth the added costs but the cheap price of them in the US would make it a good value treat over there.
