Advantages: Quick and Tasty
Disadvantages: None
Hovis tea cakes are round fruited breads made with currents and raisins, they are delicious to eat any time of the day, and I particularly like them first thing in the morning with a cuppa instead of toast.
Toasted tea cakes can be sliced in half and served hot or cold with butter, but traditionally they are toasted and spread ,when still piping hot with butter, the butter will sink straight into the tea cake, making it soft and the fruity sweet taste the raisins and currents give to them are just divine. There is orange and lemon peel amongst the ingredients as well and you can taste a nice citrus undercurrent.
If you are feeling really naughty you can put some jam on as well, but this takes away the taste of the tea cake so I prefer just to use butter.
Hovis tea cakes are the best I have found to date, they are lovely and crunchy on the top when toasted and then soft in the middle as the butter sinks in. They are also delicious without any topping on if you are dieting and you will still get all the sweet flavour without the added calories of a topping.
Hovis tea cakes contain no artificial preservatives or flavourings. Per tea cake they contain 158 calories 1.5g fat of which 0.6g is saturates, they have nice fibre content as well at 1.8g per tea cake.
The tea cakes must be stored in a cool dry place and used within 2 days of opening, they can also be frozen on the day of purchase.
Hovis tea cakes are normally around 70p for a pack of 4 but at the moment Tesco have an offer of 2 packs for £1.00 until 15/06 2010.
Summary: Great with a cuppa
