“ Brand: Iceland / Type: Cake „
I bought one of these a few years ago, I found this to be such an insult to all gateau's as the cherry sauce was like cheap cherry cola instead of liqueur, my friends agreed. Its put fear and doubt into my views of one of my fav foods.
I first bought the Iceland Black Forest Gateau, as my contribution to a works buffet. After reading good reviews on this product, I decided to call into my local Iceland Store.
I defrosted it overnight in my fridge, which was recommended, then took it to work the following morning and left in the fridge until midday.
On the box it says '16 portion' however to divide this way would only leave a tiny portion per person. I decided to divide into '12 portions' on the day (recommended to cut when partly defrosted as very soft). If however you are a 'chocoholic' like me, you may prefer a more generous portion.
On the day everyone was very impressed and there were good comments on the taste. The fresh cream was lovely and the cake very moist with nice flavour. Had I not bought it myself, I would definitely have thought this was a bakery gateau.
If you're looking to impress with a nice Black Forest Gateau, which by the way, seems to be making a comeback, then this is the one, believe me!
The Iceland Black Forest Gateau!
A chocolate sponge with layers of sweetened cream and cherry sauce, topped with morello cherries, cream swirls and chocolate flakes, also decorated with plain chocolate drops.
Oh my god, this is an amazing desert at an amazing price.
My wife and I were recently told by some friends that we should start shopping in Iceland, that their prices were great and that they had a massive selection of frozen products (obviously we have also seen this in the adverts). Now I was dubious at first as I haven't got a large freezer and the idea of going into a shop for a few bits when I could get them on my normal shop, seemed a bit silly.
We were out one day and decided that we would just have a look, just to see what all the fuss was about, and how glad was I that I did. We had a big Sunday roast coming up and were looking for a nice desert to cater for over 10 people and wanted to get one big cake to do the job.
As we walked around the store we came across the black forest gateau, now I'm not a massive fan of that particular desert but I knew alot of the family were, so I decided to give it a closer inspection. Firstly, I have to admit the picture did look nice, secondly, the size was big, big enough to supposedly cater for 16 people, and then thirdly, the price was astonishing at only £3. The cheapest large desert I had seen by far. But as you can imagine, this price instantly led me to believe, the desert must not be that great in reality. As the desert was big enough though, and I had had enough of trekking the shops, I decided to buy it.
What I got I got received a good surprise. After opening the box, the reality of the gateau was that it looked identical to the picture, something that you don't always get. But again, looks can be deceiving. I had to wait a few days before being able to find out the truth behind its quality, or non-quality, but after an enjoyable fattening roast, I have to tell you that the pudding went down a treat. Everybody including me found it absolutely delicious! and there was left overs. Now I wouldn't say that I think it can cater for 16 people, not unless they all want child portions, but it certainly took care of 10, with some for seconds.
Now obviously you have to be a fan of this type of food, but if you are into an arrangement of ingredients like this, then for value, size and quality, this is the one to buy! I 100% recommend it!
