The best twig-shaped snacks out there
Member Name: deedee610
Advantages: Marmite flavoured; twig-shaped
Disadvantages: Marmite flavoured; twig-shaped
WHAT ARE THEY: Despite what many people think, they are not bits of tree that have fallen off and been stuffed into a bag (although some would argue bits of tree would taste better). They're actually crisp wheat-based snacks with a "distinctive knobbly shape" (like a small twig). Amazingly, they've been around since 1929. I can only imagine that when the Great Depression hit, Twiglets were among the first victims of cutbacks. I certainly know, in this current economic climate, that I'm not eating as many packets as I used to.
ARE THEY NICE? Well, this sort of depends on whether you like Marmite or not. And twig-shaped snackery. Essentially, the main thing the Twiglet has going for it (for me) is the Marmite-y taste. Other than that, it not only looks like a twig but tastes like one. I know because I've tried it. I've licked off all the Marmite, let it dry out then eaten it. Totally tasteless. Actually, I don't think it's real Marmite on them - simply yeast extract, but it all tastes the same to me. So bottom line - if you hate Marmite, your'e going to hate Twiglets. If you like Marmite, however, this isn't necessarily a guarantee that you will like them. The Marmite blast is fleeting really.
ARE THE GOOD FOR YOU? They're not as good for you as, say, a stick of celery (slathered with Marmite) but they are certainly better for you than eating real twigs. They're probably also preferable to quaffing down a similar-size bag of Monster Munch. A 25g bag is 97 calories and is actually quite filling. But if you want to look like Victoria Beckham (who, ironically, actually looks like a twiglet with arms and legs - oh, and a head) then you're probably best not to eat too many packets in a day.
Summary: If you like Marmite and twigs, you'll love these
