“ Brand: Levi Roots / Type: Snacks „
Like many people I first became aware of the multi-talented British-Jamaican musician and entrpreneur Levi Roots when he appeared on the TV show 'Dragon's Den' trying to drum up cash for a new spicy sauce he wished to produce. He gave this sauce the memorable title of 'Reggae Reggae Sauce' and the product was quick to hit shelves in supermarkets across the country. Since then Levi has been a busy boy and has branched out into other product production including this nut mix. I had never actually heard of these nuts until I saw them in Tesco but they looked so exciting that I had to buy them!
The product is a mix of peanuts and cashew nuts flavoured with Levi's Reggae Reggae Sauce. The product I bought was a small 90g bag. It's about enough for two people to share. The packaging is wonderful as it's bright and eye-catching. The front of the packet shows the silhoette of a dreadlocked man dancing and the phrase 'Put some music in your food' is written nearby. The packet has a comprehensive list of ingedients listed. This includes the recipe for the Reggae Reggae seasoning and the Reggae Reggae sauce. Also provided is nutritional information and storage instructions.
The Reggae Reggae flavourings are designed to be hot and spicy so the recipe includes items such as garlic, spring onions, ginger, red scotch bonnet chilli, pepper, mixed herbs, paprika, cinnamon, coriander, basil, thyme, tomato puree and more.
The packet contains a mix of peanuts and cashew nuts. The peanuts I found were of different sizes with some of them being very large and some of them quite minute. Most of the cashew pieces were half pieces. The Reggae Reggae seasoning is a reddish brown colour and coats the nuts as well as being slightly powdery in the packet. The cashew nuts seemed to have the most seasoning covering them whilst some of the nuts were almost bare. I summise that every packet will be different in this respect. I did notice that a lot of the flavouring gathers at the bottom of the pack though so if you do get a bare nut you can stick it into the corner of the packet and rub some flavouring onto it.
There is a very strong smell when you open the packet. It's like a cooked meal smell with a very strong tomato and herb base. It is mouth-wateringly delicious. The flavour of the seasoning is very unique. I'm a big fan of flavoured nuts and chilli nuts in particular and I think these nuts have a very distinctive flavour. They give a sensational tingling on your tongue when you first put them in your mouth. They taste spicy but there is a undertone of sweetness too. The chilli flavour is quite shocking and very pleasant but it's not so strong that you end up choking or needing a quick drink of water afterwards! I did find that the quality of peanuts was perhaps not the best though as some of the peanuts seemed a bit chewy - almost as if they were old nuts or had been left out in the open air.
I did really enjoy the nuts overall though and would definately buy these again. They are a pefect snack to eat at night whilst enjoying a night in front of the TV and they go with other snack foods and cold drink really well. They are a fun nibble!
Nutritional values on the packet indicate that per 100g the nuts provide 572 calories and 46.1g of fat (of which saturates 7.6g). The nuts are also stamped as being suitable for both vegetarians and vegans. The nuts do contain gluten and barley however.
Levi Roots has a great website where you can access information about products, find recipes and more:
Weak flavour, not impressed at all. I love reggea reggae sauce and bought these on the basis of that. They were expensive and are literally the weakest flavour nuts I have ever tried. It was not an inherently bad flavour, just so wishy washy it didnt seem worth making. Also the nuts were a bit soft, I didnt even finish the packet. I dont believe the other reviewers could have had the same nuts as me as none of my friends liked them either.Sorry Levi but you need to sort these out.
I was first introduced to the Reggae Reggae product range through Levi Roots' cookbook "Caribbean Food Made Easy" last Christmas.Since this time I have tried and tested many of his products and am now well aware of one that I had unwittingly missed out on before. His latest product, Reggae Reggae Peanuts & Cashews, is an excellent interpretation of a popular snack food choice for many.In my opinion this great value snack, which is available in TESCO and ASDA for £1.29, is a tasty treat that can be enjoyed by all - anywhere at any time. Spicy, tangy and packed with crunchy nuts - it is now without doubt my favourite snack. I always ensure my cupboard at home is fully stocked! I have recommended the nuts to a number of friends and work colleagues and have yet to receive a less than happy response.
I have always been a fan of Levi Roots' Reggae Reggae sauce and have championed his business since seeing him sing on the BBC's Dragons Den! I stumbled across these nutty little numbers in Tesco's snack aisle whilst looking for some nibbles to go with my first summer barbecue in 2010!
These delicious peanuts and cashew nuts are coated in the Reggae Reggae sauce, which are then baked in the oven for the ultimate crunchy and crispy bite. The jerk seasoning is sumptuously sweet, sour and smoky, which perfectly complimented my barbecue burgers and chilli chicken wings. However, do not pigeon hole these little delights as purely summer snacks. They can be enjoyed all year round at home or on the go. I know that my boyfriend was flavour of the month at the office when I put these in his lunchbox!
Grab yours now for £1.29 for a 90g bag at Tesco!
