Mc Vitie's Go Ahead Raspberry Yogurt Breaks
Advantages: Quite nice snack, healthier than chocolate
Disadvantages: Yogurt only on one side, unimpressive ingredients
I'm one of those people constantly searching for something new and healthy to calm my chocolate addiction, well, last week, desperation led me to purchasing McVities Go Ahead Yogurt Breaks (This, for me, was a last straw - I hate yogurt!)
I went for Raspberry, although they also do Strawberry, Blueberry, Topical, Plain and Forest Fruits in the Yogurt Breaks range, because I really do enjoy raspberries - plus, they are a superfood!
The box promised good things, boasting only 72kcal and 1.8f of fat per slice with no artificial colours or flavours, which sounded a promising alternative to my usual biscuits. The box, at around £2.25, contains 6 packs of 2 slices - perfect addition to a lunch box, a light snack or even as an extra with breakfast.
It describes the product as 'Delicious yogurt flavour topping on a light crispy biscuit with a sultana and raspberry flavoured filling'. At which point it was still sounding promising to me.
The packaging design was also an added bonus, bright green emoted a sense of natural and the raspberries depicted behind the brand logo suggested real fruit fillings - which, to an extent, they are - raspberry puree and sultanas (finished product contains 20% sultanas, 4% currants and equivalent of 1.1% Raspberry), although with some commercial binding agents and similar, it isn't as unhealthy as some of the alternatives on the market. The individual twin packs are foil and sealed - maintaining freshness and a crisp break every time, as well as making them great for travelling or lunch boxes, and contain all the ingredient and nutritional information again.
So then we got onto the taste, I was slightly apprehensive, due to the aformentioned hatred of yogurt - but I truly was pleasantly suprised! The filling is consistent but thick enough to feel like real fruit, the biscuit is crisp and quite delicious, making a lovely crunch - which, considering you eat with texture as well as taste, made a lovely combination with the filling - and the dreaded yogurt was sweet and soft and actually very pleasant. I was surpised to find the yogurt on only one side of the slice, and infact, I would have preferred in on both - but all in all it was a very delicious product. The taste, is something I can only describe as Jammy Dodger - I even got people around me to try them and they agreed, the sweetness of the yogurt and the biscuit with the raspberry filling emulated the jam in a jammy dodger, overall, a lovely alternative to the biscuits, with a similar sweetness - but without the extra unhealthyness.
Per slice, nutritional value is as follows:
72 Calories ( 4% RDA)
7.0g Sugars (8% RDA)
1.8g Fat (3% RDA)
0.8g Saturates (4% RDA)
0.1g Salt (2% RDA)
Not the healthiest health snack really, and the ingredient list isn't exactl organic, but a very nice and delicious alternative to chocolate biscuits - and definitely keeps you going a lot longer! So for me, an excellent find as an alternative to traditional, unhealthy biscuits!!
