Mc Vities Jaffa Cakes
Advantages: versatile, perfect combination of textures and flavours!
Disadvantages: addictive! :D
Who can't resist a couple (or five) Mcvitie's jaffa cakes with a cuppa? I know I can't! There's just something about jaffa cakes that makes them so appealing. It probably has something to do with the fact that chocolate and orange go together like fish and chips and adding cake into the equation just makes them even more exciting!
These Jaffa cakes are made by Mcvitie's who are a confectionary company. They are one of the most well-known biscuit companies and have been around for over 100 years. As well as Jaffa cakes Mcvitie's produce biscuits such as the traditional digestives and rich tea, gingernuts, fruit shortcakes, hobnobs, boasters, penguins, taxis, gold bars and their latest additions medley cereal bars and quirks.
~ Product and availability ~
Mcvitie's Jaffa cakes are widely available in most supermarkets (I think it would be a crime if they didn't sell them!)They are available to buy in packs 36 for around £3.09, packs of 24 for around £2.19, packs of 12 for around £1.19, 6 miniature pots of 6 cakes for around £1.69 and lastly in share bag form for roughly £1.59. Make sure you shop around though as there are usually some sort of 2 for 1 or BOGOF deals on. Mcvitie's Jaffa cakes are also available to buy in dark chocolate, as mini rolls and as cake bars.
~ Packaging ~
Mcvitie's Jaffa cakes come in a deep blue rectangular cardboard box. On the front of the box you will find the Mcvitie's logo and underneath this in large orange letters the words Jaffa cakes in font stylised to look like the skin of an orange. In the corner there is a little picture of an orange and inside this it tells me there is 1g fat per cake. Basic nutritional information is also on the front of the box for convenience and is easy to read at a glance. The end of the box describes this product as the perfect blend of bittersweet dark crackly chocolate, light sponge and zingy orange centre. The back of the box gives you details about healthy eating, keeping active, allergy information, nutritional information in more detail and the ingredients list. Inside the box the Jaffa cakes are wrapped in an orange plastic wrapper to keep them fresh whilst in the packaging.
~ Appearance, smell, taste and texture ~
Mcvitie's Jaffa cakes are small and round and quite fragile/soft to hold. They look very cute and appetising with their soft, spongy golden base and their dark rippled chocolate topping. They smell slightly of orange but not a lot. Biting into one of these you are met with a mixture of perfectly bonded textures and tastes. Just as Mcvitie's describes it; bittersweet crackly chocolate, zingy tart orange filling all on top of a bed of spongy cake. The chocolate is quite thin so perhaps a little more would be nice for more of an intense chocolaty taste but there are definitely ample amounts of orange filling and sponge. The orange filling tastes a lot like marmalade. The chocolate isn't very sweet but it doesn't need to be because it compliments and balances out the sweetness of the orange. These are very easy to eat and very soft in your mouth, they almost crumble and melt in your mouth as you munch your way through. I'd say there are about 2-3 bites per cake but I know for a fact my partner prefers to do it all in one! These cakes are extremely Moorish and light, they don't leave you with that full, heavy feeling after eating a whole packet (not from past experience obviously :D) but I'm not sure if this is an advantage or not, decide for yourselves.
~ Other information ~
Each Mcvitie's Jaffa cake contains 46 calories, 6.4g of sugar, 1.0g of fat, 0.5g of saturates and less than 0.1g of salt. Shame about the sugar but I guess that's what you get for eating a chocolate, orange cake! Calories don't seem too bad but they soon mount up when you have 5 or 6. Who stops at one? I am seriously envious of you if you can!
Allergy advice: Contains milk, egg, soya and gluten.
Mcvitie's Jaffa cakes are suitable for vegetarians.
Some ingredients include: plain chocolate, glucose- fructose syrup, vegetable fat, cocoa butter, citric acid and orange juice.
Contains natural orange flavourings.
~ Over all verdict ~
Well, I can't really say a bad thing about this little chocolaty, orangey, cakey delights other than the fact that they leave me with no will power as I can't possibly stop at just one or two. They make a delicious alternative to your usual cuppa and a biscuit, pair up well with your packed lunch or just as a quick pick me up. Just a word of warning that they do dry out if left in the opened box, so I would advise you to transfer them into a biscuit tin or airtight container of some sort (if they last that long!). I would for sure recommend these to adults and children alike, Mcvitie's is a brand that most people can rely on for quality and this product doesn't let them down one bit. I dare you to try and resist the temptation!
A well deserved 5/5 stars! My favourite biscuit/cake in the Mcvitie's range by far!
Summary: These don't last 5 minutes in my house! Great job Mr.Mcvitie!
