Mc Vities Mini Cheddars
Advantages: taste, flavour
Disadvantages: high in fat/calories
My love affair with all things savoury took an unexpected twist today whilst filling the car with petrol. Going in to pay I noticed some Mini Cheddars on the shelf and having not had a bag for years I picked up a packet. I was surprised to see all different flavours available now rather than just plain cheese and was especially taken when I noticed the Branston Pickle flavour.
Contained in a foil fresh dark green bag containing 50 grams the pack tells me that its contents are made with real cheese and that these are baked mini cheddars. They are described as being "The bite size snack with the big cheese taste" and are "baked, not fried"
Nutritional information is slightly alarming when read, my 50g pack contains:
2.4g of which sugars
11.1g of which are saturates
So when compared with a packet of crisps these are higher in calorie and fat content and I ended up hoping that the taste made up for this.
Opening the bag and you are met with the aroma of pickle, there are lots of small circular shaped biscuits contained within and are a lovely golden brown colour. As soon as you put one into your mouth you can taste the Branston Pickle and cheese flavouring; slightly reminiscent of pickled onion Monster munch but nowhere near as strong. The mini biscuits break up nicely when chewed and your mouth is filled with flavour. You get plenty of biscuits in the pack and I thoroughly enjoyed them, they made a very nice change from regular crisps and were certainly worth the 55p I paid for them. Being Branston Pickle flavoured this is the dominant taste but you do detect a nice cheesy flavour there as well, the balance between the two is perfect and made for a very enjoyable snack.
I can't remember ever seeing this flavour in a supermarket, so not sure if these are available in multi packs, they certainly don't seem to be widely available which is a shame as these are very delicious and extremely moreish.
Checking the pack you are warned that they do contain Milk, Egg, Wheat and Gluten and are produced on a line handling Soya so allergen sufferers be aware.
I would definitely recommend this flavour to anyone if they are stocked near to you as they do make a lovely change from crisps. Other flavours are also available including Extra Mature Cheddar, Cheese and Onion, BBQ and Salt and Vinegar so I will certainly be keeping my eye out now for the other varieties.
All in all they get a 4/5 Dooyoo star rating from me, losing a star for the fat and calorie content but heartily recommended all the same.
Summary: A tasty change from crisps.
