McVitie's Chocolate Cake
Disadvantages: Can become stodgy
I always do my shopping after work on a Friday and quite often I like to pop something in the trolley to enjoy on a Saturday afternoon with a cup of tea. I have had this cake a few times now but I first bought it when it was on a 2 for £1 offer. I am familiar with the McVities brand and have enjoyed many of their products in the past so thought this would probably be of a similar quality.
The cake itself is in the shape of a small loaf. It is covered with a plastic wrapping which opens to reveal the cake sat in a paper casing along the bottom. The cake is a chocolate brown colour and is about 20cm long x 10cm wide.
When the cake is opened a nice chocolaty smell is present. I use a normal knife to cut it into squares and it went through the cake effortlessly. I was pleased with how it looked on the plate because sometimes things like this can look great in the wrapper but as soon as you dish them up they crumble and end up in a heap on the plate.
I usually eat this with my fingers as the cake holds together well when I pick it up. I do really like the taste of this, I find it has a nice soft texture and is fairly moist. There is just the right amount of chocolate taste too; I find the balance perfect and not at all sweet or sickly.
I usually eat this cake alongside a cup of tea as it is necessary to help wash it down as I think it gets a little stodgy on its own. Alternatively I think it would be nice with a splash of pouring cream or some warm custard.
The nutritional quantities given include 92 calories, 5.4g sugar and 0.7g saturated fat. I think this is a little misleading as these quantities are for one ninth of the cake and realistically I think it would only serve 6.
My only real problem with this product is storage. Once opened, the plastic rips and there is no way of wrapping it back around the cake to cover the part that is left. It is necessary to dispose of the plastic and cover with cling film or put in a Tupperware box instead. Obviously this isn't a big issue just an annoyance.
I think this is a good price for a nice cake, even without the offer it is only £0.83. This works out a lot cheaper than buying a lot of other cakes in the supermarket. The other great thing about this product is that it has a long shelf life so could be kept in the cupboard in case an unexpected visitor pops in or you get a sudden craving.
Summary: Not a bad effort from McVities
