McVities Galaxy Cake Bar
Advantages: Tasty, not overpowering chocolate taste, good for lunchbox fillers, good value on offer
Disadvantages: Expensive at full price, not very filling
I picked up a multipack of 5 Galaxy cake bars a few days ago whilst I was picking up milk from the local Co-op. I try to avoid shops outside of the weekly "big shop" for this reason, but I knew the cupboard was a bit bare so although times are hard I decided we shouldn't go hungry and so I picked up one of the cheapest treats which were these bars.
The bars were on offer at £1 for a pack of 5. This isn't bad value when you think you can't buy many snack sized chocolates or cakes for just 20p each these days! At full price they were nearer the £2 mark, but you can get them from Tesco for less than this and they're the kind of thing that's often on offer in the supermarkets so keep your eyes peeled.
The bars come individually wrapped which makes them excellent for lunchboxes for work or school. The bars are made by McVities, and the packaging is brown with images of the cake bar, it looks very inviting which is what drew me towards these bars. On opening the wrapper, you don't really notice the smell of chocolate as much as I'd like, and this made me suspect it wasn't going to taste very chocolately. I was wrong though, as it gives you a chocolate hit without being overly intense or overpowering.
The cake bar is made of chocolate flavoured sponge which is very light and airy. This is covered in a light coating of smooth and creamy Galaxy chocolate which, lets face it, you can't really go wrong with! Galaxy know their chocolate. I like the contrasting textures of the soft sponge and the firmer chocolate layer, it makes you feel like you're getting two treats in one.
The taste of this is, as mentioned earlier, probably the right level of chocolate for me. Proper dedicated chocolate lovers might not find it strong enough, in which case you'd be better off with a full on chocolate bar.
The only issue I had eating this is that it can be a bit messy if you've carried it to work, as the outer chocolate layer can break a bit so when you open the wrapper you end up with chocolate all over the place. It's probably not best suited for eating at your desk as you'll be finding crumbs of evidence for the rest of the day!
Overall, these are a nice little snack to have in your lunchbox or in the cupboard at home. The only thing I found was that it didn't really fill me for long and I was thinking about food again not long afterwards. I don't usually have this issue with larger snacks but then I guess you pay the price with calories for something more filling, although for 163 calories I would expect these to fill me more.
Nutritional information for each bar is:
Calories - 163
Sugar - 15g
Fat - 9g
Saturates - 5g
Salt - 0.3g
These bars are suitable for vegetarians.
I'd buy these again, but only if they were on offer.
Summary: Worth a try for something different
