“ Brand: McVities / Type: Cereal Bars „
Right, another one of those Go Ahead reviews!
Also new to the range is the Fruity Crunch Bar - currently available in two flavours, Chocolate and Red Berry and Tropical. Unfortunately Tesco failed to deliver the Tropical variety so Chocolate and Red Berry it was.
These bars are packaged in 6's, maybe McVities should have some consistency to the amount of bars that are included in their products (some of the others are available in 5s). You can see the product straight away thanks to the see through cellophane wrapper.
'Individually wrapped crisped rice bar with toasted oats and Cranberry, Redcurrant and Strawberry pieces topped with smooth milk chocolate'. Sounds nice on the packet but what is it like?
I was absolutely shocked about the size of these bars! They are tiny and at £1.39 for 6 I find them very poor value for money. They measure around 6 centimetres so a few bites and they are gone! They are quite solid and include a very thin layer of chocolate on top of the crisp bar.
The bar is very bland. The crispy rice pieces have no taste to them at all and they are not very crispy. The red berries are sharp and juicy but there are not very many of them. So that just leaves the chocolate! You can't really taste the chocolate topping which is around 2mm thick and does not really taste like chocolate. Once you take a bite of the bar the bottom falls to pieces in your hand.
Just because something is low in fat shouldn't mean you have to compromise on the taste but unfortunately this is what has happened in this case. They have a very short shelf life - I purchased this two weeks into January and the use by date is the 2nd March so make sure you eat them in plenty of time. I will still be purchased the tropical version to try as I am intrigued by the flavour.
85 calories per slice.
Price and Availability
As mentioned above these retail at £1.39 but a currently on offer in Tesco on Buy One Get One Free. They are available in most large supermarkets.
I really am a big fan of Go Ahead products but seems as though I have managed to stumble across a few bad apples. I will carry on until I have worked myself through the whole range! I still have faith in them. I just found these were very poor value for money.
