Go Ahead Fruit Bakes ~ Raspberry
If like me, you are trying to keep an eye on your weight, but every now and then you really fancy something nice and sweet, without the fear of piling on the pounds, then these little beauties are just the thing.
~~~ Packaging ~~~
These little bakes are very noticeable in their bright and cheerful box, with Go Ahead in large bold lettering across the front, which make it instantly recognisable The box is approximately 5" x 5" in size and is in a bright green colour with huge splashes of orange and pink on the front. There are 6 little bars in a box, and the bars are all individually wrapped in the same colours as the outer box, keeping each bar fresh until needed.
~~~ The bars ~~~
When you open the wrapper to the bar you can instantly smell the lovely Raspberry smell. The bar itself is about 4" long and is made up of a delicious wheat biscuit. When you bit into the biscuit it is of a soft consistency with only a very slight crunchyness to it, not at all like a biscuit more like a hard cake. Inside there is a lovely fruit flavoured filling that has the consistency and a look of a jam.
~~~ Taste ~~~
When you bite into these bars the first bite is like biting into a hard cake so it has a bit of strength to it ....... it isn't soft and gooey as it looks on the packaging. The fruit flavour in the centre is just right, it isn't too sweet but just sweet enough, with a little tangyness to the fruit. If there is a downside I would say that it is perhaps a little on the dry side.
~~~ Nutrition ~~~
For those interested in the nutritional side of these bars, for a 35g bar they are as follows:_
* Kcals ~ 124
* Protein ~ 0.9g
* Carbs ~ 25.8g
* (of which sugars) ~ 9.7g
* Fat ~ 2.5g
* (of which sats) ~ 1.2g
* Fibre ~ 0.4g
* Sodium ~ 0.2g
~~~ Opinion ~~~
These are really very nice little snacks and at only 124 kcals per bar they are not too bad for your waistline either. They are nice and fruity and the outer cake is a good substantial texture that is, not too soft and not too hard. These bakes come in a few different varieties, including:
* Apple and Blackberry
* Strawberry Twist.
All in all they are a tasty little snack if you want something sweet to go with your cup of tea or coffee.
They can be found in all good supermarkets and prices will vary.
Thank you for reading my review!
Being at college and currently between financial support at the moment through no fault of my own, I try to take in whatever food I can to reduce what we spend as we are now on one income. On one of our two monthly shops we get either one or two boxes of these.
Slightly overpriced, not too fond at all. You get six in one packet and they are big enough to keep you going until dinner time. Expect to pay between £1.60 and £1.80 for a box of six. They last me about a week and a half so spending £1.80 for another box every week slowly adds up. I might as well buy one every day while I am out!
Very good; the fruit in the middle isn't lumpy and you get a generous amount. The cake part on the outside is very...well cakey. Quite soft, not stale or crispy. These don't make much mess at all so you needn't worry about brushing crumbs away. Quite filling. I take two for a 6 hour day at college, this is alongside a sandwich for dinner.
All can be recycled, no unnecessary packaging and very easy to open.
Go Ahead - Fruit Bake
McVities Go Ahead products have been specifically designed for the lower fat market segment. They have a range of different cereal bars, crisps etc and it is their Go Ahead Raspberry Fruit Bake Bars that I am going to be reviewing. I really enjoy their yogurt bars so was really interested to try these fruit bake bars and see how they compared.
McVitie's describe them as " golden baked bars with a delicious raspberry flavoured filling." They can be pretty much described as just like a Kellogg's Special K Nutri-grain bar, ie they look the same and have the same consistency. The fruit filling is a compote type consistency and fairly smooth rather than in fruit pieces. The outside of the bar is made of a wheat crust.
What first attracted me to this bars is that it actually says on the box in big lettering that they contain 50% more fruit. The fruit flavour did have a nice raspberry taste. It was quite sweet though and did taste a bit processed, not like a fresh, real raspberry. That said though, the fruit section was quite thick, more than probably you get in a Nutri-grain bar. McVitie's do actually advertise that if you like the taste of fruit you will love these bars. I think I could find something a bit more satisfying if I was looking for a fruit snack but these were ok.
It was the outer wheat crust that I did not like. It was definitely golden on the top but I found it really quite dry and not very appetising at all. What I like about a Nutri-grain is that the wheat layer is quite moist but this was not moist at all and it really was not fun to eat. The only thing that saved this bar was the fact that once you bit through the outer layer you did get to the fruit in the middle. The bar was a solid bar but had three sections to it where the crust was divided and indented so you could almost break the bar apart if you wanted to.
The bars come in individual packaging and there are 6 bars in a box. At Sainsburys a box costs £1.99 but at the moment they are running a promotion, buy two for £3 which is not too bad. As well as the raspberry flavour they also have apple, strawberry and blackberry and apple. I am yet to try any of these but I might give them a go although there would be other cereal bars I would buy before going back to these again.
The good thing about these biscuits is that they are fairly healthy and McVitie's actually market these as a tasty and wholesome snack. Each bar contains 124 calories and 2.5g of fat making it a guilt free choice in the mornings. I also find they do fill you up quite substantially. So, Go Ahead and buy something good for yourself.
GoAhead bars are something I eat when I want to have something healthier than chocolate but still something sweet. Honestly though I only find myself eating them when theres no chocolate in the house.
Raspberry is definatey one of my favorite flavours though, ive tried the apple and the blackcurrent varieties too, but the raspberry has the strongest taste for me. The filling is basically raspberry jam, so if you like that you should like these. On the box it says there is now 50% more filling and in the ingredient list it says it is 53% of the product. At the bottom of the ingredient list it then says the equivalent raspberry amount is 16% of the product and it previously was 10%. A little confusing i thought.
In the box I have there are 6x 35g bars, to give u an idea of the size they are 10cm x 3cm and approx 1cm thick. The bar has two indentations accross it making it look like a mini loaf of bread and so you can split it into three pieces if you want.
The wheat crust of the bar can be very hard especially if you dont eat them soon after buying, even though they are all separately packed in plastic. There is an even distribution of fruit filling and crust so they are never boring nor too sweet. I find that I need to eat two of them though to feel full.
Each bar contains 124 calories and 2.5g of fat (1.2g of which are saturates, none of which are the nasty trans fats) so they are definately healthier than chocolate for a snack.
Ive checked online now and they are 1.97 for the box of 6 in asda.
Macvitties make many types of biscuits, But there all time best sub-brand is the go ahead range. There is a large range which includes things like yoghurt bakes, biscuits, crisps, savory slices and even straxberry mallows. tasty. The best bit is though,that they are all quite healthy and do not taste like rabbit food! :P The fruit bakes come in a variety of flavours including apple, blackcurrant, strawberry and the best.. Rasberry. With a hard cake-like outing and soft fruity inner they are great for a breakfast on the go, or even a light snack. Each bar is in three individual segments which makes themeasier to eat. It means that you can even save them for latter. These bars are great for people who want to watch their diet yeat still get nice tasting food whichh will fill your stomach.
