Schools these days are trying very hard to make sure that the packed lunch you give your child is healthy and not stuffed with terrible things for them to eat. Because of this the school my son attends does not allow chocolate in the boxes but they do allow a chocolate biscuit like a Penguin or Breakaway.
I have brought these Penguin biscuits for years now and the children enjoy them a lot. They are made by McVities so you expect the biscuit part of these to be delicious as they are a famous biscuit maker.
True to form the biscuit is crisp enough to give it that crunch and the chocolate covering is just thick enough to give it that treat. It is similar to a chocolate covered digestive in a way and the covering is only slightly thicker than those. There is also a creamy chocolate filling inside the biscuit which keeps the biscuit from being too dry and this adds a very delicious sweet and creamy inner to the whole thing.
I always buy the plain milk chocolate variety of Penguins but you can also get them in Mint or Orange flavour in a variety pack. I have brought these before but no-one really liked them that much and I ended up cutting them up and putting them in a cake. Milk chocolate version is definitely the best in my opinion.
Would you believe the Penguin bar is now 75 years old and my husband remembers having it in his lunchbox at school. Our parents couldn't afford things like that in their school days so 30 years ago is our furthest memory of these biscuits but I can certainly remember the adverts!
Nutrition wise, the Penguin biscuits are not too bad. They only contain 96 calories (less than a two finger kit-kat) and they have no trans fats, artificial colours or flavourings, so although they are still classed as a treat it is on the better end of the treat scale.
My children enjoy these snacks and they are an excellent price at the moment in Sainsbury's as they are on offer for half price at just £1.07 for a pack of 18. Excellent value for the school lunch box.
