Advantages: Yummy. Low cal.

Disadvantages: Too much sugar for a "diet" product.

I don't really get to shop at Morrisons as much as I do the other big supermarkets, as there are Sainsburys and Tesco stores very near where I live. However, I had to pop into Morrisons pharmacy yesterday as it was the only one open out of hours, and while I was in store, I used the opportunity to do a top up shop.

One of the items I bought was a box of "Eat Smart" Lemon cake slices. I bought them because firstly, they were cheap, less than £1 a box, and secondly, they seemed a lower calorie option than other cakes and I am trying to lose a bit of weight at the moment!

The cakes come in a navy blue box, which contains six cake slices. The box shows a picture of the slices, which are sponge cake slices with a layer of icing on the top. The nutritional information is displayed on the front of the box and is as follows per slice:

Cal 84
Sugar 13.2g
Fat 0.6g
Salt trace

I was impressed with the low fat content, but the cakes did seem to be a less healthy option in the sugar department! The rear of the box informs those following the Weight Watchers plan that one slice is one point in value.

I buy similar type cakes from Tesco regularly, and was expecting something very similar in taste and texture, but I couldn't have been more wrong. The Morrisons cakes had a much more "homemade" feel about them, with lovely crumbly moist cake. These taste like cakes that my mom makes, absolutely gorgeous. Usually, these sort of cakes taste quite artificial, but I was really impressed with the quality of this product. The cakes had a lovely lemon flavour too, due to the fact that they contain lemon zest and the icing contains lemon juice. The icing was deliciously sweet, with a lovely zesty lemon flavour complimenting the whole thing beautifully.

These cakes proved really popular with my family, with my son enjoying his with a large dollop of hot custard. The high quality of these cakes has made me keen to try other products in this range. They are certainly a cut above your average supermarket own brand cakes. I reckon I could even fool visitors into thinking I had made thse myself!

The cakes are suitable for vegetarians. The box is recycleable. Once opened, the cakes should be stored in a cool dry place in an airtight container. That is, if your family doesn't eat them all in one go! The back of the pack contains an allergy warning that the product contains egg and gluten, and the fact that the cakes are produced in a factory that uses milk, nuts and soya.

I can't rate these cakes highly enough. They are really good value for money, and a nice treat if, like me, you are trying to cut the calories. I wiull definitely be going out of my way to shop at Morrisons in future and buy these cakes again. They are something really special. Five stars.

Summary: Superior cakes.
