Every now and then I get a craving for cake. I do prefer to bake my own, but don't very often get the time, and always seem to have more important things to do on my days off!
So I do sometimes buy a box of cakes, usually Mr Kipling slices or a fresh cheesecake,to satisfy my cravings, but it's not very often that I buy a boxed whole cake.
I was browsing the cake section in Morrisons the other day, and I noticed this Lemon Drizzle cake. The title alone had my mouth watering! The packaging was also very attractive too. The cake comes in a yellow box, with a lovely looking lemon cake on the front, 'drizzled' with icing. It is described on the box as 'Lemon flavour sponge cake with a lemon juice icing'.
I must admit I do like lemon cake and sometimes buy Mr Kipling's lemon slices which I love. However, anyone who buys Mr Kipling slices will know that while they are quite nice, they are not very big and cost over £1 a box.
As my eyes fell upon this Lemon Drizzle cake, I noticed it was priced at £1.19, which I thought wasn't bad considering the price of a box of slices. Also I had quite a big cake craving that day and imagined cutting a big slice to have with my coffee!
So with that image in my mind, the cake was quickly off the shelf and into my basket!
On opening the box, I noticed the cake didn't exactly look the same as on the box, and this was due to the icing. On the box you see a decent layer of white icing on the cake, however, the icing on my cake was a very thin layer. So thin in fact that it was almost transparent. The top of the cake was clearly visible through the icing.
On cutting the cake, the icing cracked into pieces and broke off, making quite a mess. I also noticed the icing was hard as well as thin.
The other thing I noticed was the lemon nuggets in the sponge which are clearly visible on the box, were not really visible at all on the cake.
After cutting myself a slice and biting into it, I found it did taste quite nice. The sponge was fairly moist, but it did taste a little dry and harder at the edges. The main disappointment was the icing, which tasted ok but quite hard. Certainly not a patch on the icing on Mr Kipling's Lemon Slices!
Overall, the cake was enough to satisfy my craving but I don't think I will buy it again. It certainly looks far better on the box than it actually is. Also the icing was a big let down, being hard and thin it just broke off everywhere! I know it is meant to be 'drizzled' with icing, but mine was more of a drip!

I don't in general have a sweet tooth, but now and again I get this fanatical urge for some cake (that's aside from the other fanatical urges I occasionally get for ice cream and chocolate). Whilst barging my way through Morrisons the other day, I spotted their own brand of Lemon Drizzle Cake for a mere 99p. Not being quite sure what to expect, as lemon drizzle cake can differ widely depending on who has made it, I risked life and limb, and dumped one into my wire basket.
This cake comes in a largely custard-yellow coloured box, and has an image of a slice cut from the large cake on the front. The back of the box shows nutritional information, ingredients, allergy advice, Morrisons' contact details and quality claim and a statement that the cardboard box which contains the cake is recyclable.
Inside of the box the cake rests inside a cellophane wrapping (not recyclable) that is sealed at both ends. On opening the wrapper, there is a circle of greaseproof paper stuck to the bottom of the cake which I prefer to peel off before eating.
The sides of the cake are a golden brown, and the top is covered in a white brittle, lemon-flavoured water icing that doesn't dribble down the sides. On cutting into the cake, the icing breaks and shatters very easily, flying all over the place, and there are little pieces of fruit embedded in the sponge which I believe are apple nuggets.
Feeling that one-sixth of the cake was a decidedly miniscle serving, I cut myself a slice almost double that size for sampling purposes - showering myself with bits of the brittle white icing in the process. Bearing in mind what a messy business eating the cake seemed as if it was going to be, I used a fork.
On moving the first forkful towards my mouth, a lovely lemony smell permeated my nostrils. As I bit down on the cake, I noted that the "crust" at the sides was a little on the hard side, but the sponge within was beautifully moist and soft, with a delicious infusion of lemon. The lemon flavour was strongest from the white icing, and I had to scoop up the broken-off pieces so I could sample them together with the cake.
This cake had an almost, but not quite home-made feel to it, and after I'd scoffed the first overly large slice, how could I resist cutting myself another? The second slice went the same way as the first (too quickly!) and I thoroughly enjoyed both - but, after the second, I was starting to feel full as though very light and moist, the consistency of the cake is rather dense, as a home-made one would be. Also, I was beginning to find the icing just a little too sweet for my own personal taste.
I definitely would recommend this cake, and I certainly shall consider buying it again when the sweet tooth bug hits. In summary, I'd say that the icing is a little too brittle and sweet - I think I'd prefer a butter-icing for this kind of cake, but that then would be in contradiction of it being a drizzle cake....even though the icing doesn't actually drizzle. Of course it's high in fat and calories, but then all cakes are. The price is the best thing, and I'd say it's well worth every penny of the 99p I paid for it, even if the icing did scatter everywhere. Nice one Morrisons!
