Mr Kipling Country Slices
Advantages: Full of flavour, very moist
Disadvantages: small, packed in twos, high in sugar and saturates
Don't you just love to stand down the bakery isle in your local supermarket staring at the huge selection of the famous Mr Kipling's cakes? Trying to decide which one (or two) you fancy adding to your trolley for an afternoon treat this time. Drooling at the fabulous slices, biscuits, tarts, sponges and pies! There's just so much to choose from! This week I went for the country slices, I had never tried them before but thought they sounded delicious and Mr Kipling has never let me down before!
~ About Mr Kipling ~
Mr Kipling has held the no.1 cake brand title since 1976. Mr Kipling gets his cake ideas from the world around him, experimenting with new flavours and formats. Mr Kipling's cakes are bought from 60 % of UK households every year. His range includes something for everyone; French fancies, cherry bakewells, angel slices, manor house cake, Battenberg, fruit filled pies, lemon slices, chocolate slices, country slices (of which I'm reviewing), Victoria sponge slices, almond slices, Viennese whirls and jam tarts!
~ Price and availability ~
Mr Kiplings country slices are available from all well-stocked supermarkets such as Tesco's, Asda and Sainsbury's. They are available to buy in packs of six slices at around £1.40, but can often be found on offer at a £1.00 or any 2 for £2.00. I won't buy these unless there on offer because they are not worthy of £1.40 because of their size.
~ Packaging ~
Mr Kiplings country slices come in a rectangular cardboard box, the design is different from the one Dooyoo is showing. The base of the box is purple instead of green, and it looks much more upmarket and posh with the Mr Kipling logo printed in large fancy red lettering in the middle surrounded by a number of the country slices, which look gorgeous with their golden colour and studded with raisins and sultanas. In the corner you can find an at a glance clear nutritional info chart. On the back you are given a product description; moist golden sponge slices, with a hint of spice, bursting with juicy sultanas and currants. Topped with a sprinkling of sugar. Ideal for a morning treat. You will also find a full list of ingredients, full nutritional values table, a quality guarantee and some contact information on the back. Inside the box the slices are in a plastic tray that is wrapped in a plastic film for freshness, they are packed in pairs of two slices per plastic tray. All of the packaging is recyclable apart from the plastic film wrapper.
~ Appearance, smell, taste and texture ~
The slices are about the length of your index finger and about the width of 2cm. So they are pretty small and can be demolished in two bites, or you can be a pig and stuff the whole thing in your cake hole! They look exactly like the picture on the box, so there's nothing deceiving going on. They're nice and golden brown studded with plenty of juicy looking currants and sultanas and you can just make out little specs of sugar on top. They smell of Christmas, all spicy and fruity almost like the filling of a mince pie. Biting into one you get a nice crisp crunch from the sugar pieces on top and then your teeth sink into a bed of soft sponge collecting sultanas and currants on the way in. They are delicately spiced (there's definitely some cinnamon tastes in there!) and this combined with the fruit and sugar makes a very pleasant powerful flavour. They are far from tasteless! I think the ratio of spices and fruit is perfect and compliments the light sponge fingers perfectly. The texture is very soft and crumbly, just as a good cake should be. They are not one bit dry, in fact they are extremely moist.
~ Other information ~
Per slice, there are 117 calories, 12.7g of sugar, 4.7g of fat, 1.6g of sugar and 0.13g of salt. So they clearly aren't good for you at all, they contain 14 % of your GDA sugar intake as well as 8 % of your GDA's saturates!
They are made with 100 % natural colours and flavours and baked with free range eggs.
Mr kipling's country slices are baked in Britain with 100 % british wheat flour, contain no hydrogenated fats and are suitable for vegetarians.
These slices may contain traces of nuts and they do contain gluten, wheat, eggs, milk and soya.
~ Overall opinion~
I do enjoy these slices although they are not my favourites in Mr Kipling's range they are definitely one of the most flavourful. There almost warming because of their spicy wintery taste and smell. I don't like the way they are packaged in two's, there's enough calories in one without having to eat the other one before it goes stale, I end up having to hide the other one completely otherwise I will eat it. These aren't very filling either, there pretty small and wouldn't really satisfy many people - half the time I don't even know I've eaten it. I would only buy these again if they were on offer because although they are delicious portion control is an issue with me as is the fact that they are priced at £1.40 for such small pieces. I would recommend these to you if you enjoy fruit cakes more than the traditional iced ones as they make a nice change but don't expect to be full after just one! I don't think it would be a good idea to pig out on these anyway because they are so high in sugar and saturates!
If I was basing these on flavour alone I would give them 5 stars straight off, however I'm not. I'm knocking two stars off, for the twin packaging as I don't think this is helpful for anybody who is dieting or watching what they eat, for the small pieces you get for the price and the high saturates and sugars!
Summary: An overall yummy cake for lovers of spice and fruit!
