I first came across Nairn's oatcakes many years ago when first diagnosed gluten-free. Back then there were so few options for people with allergies that I was close to giving up the will. I'd always loved the taste of oats but discovered that oat porridge was not working for me so it was wonderful to discover these biscuits instead. Being gluten free means, at least in the early days, you constantly crave what you can't have, the human brain is a funny thing. So being able to satisfy my cheese and crackers urge with these biscuits was literally manna from heaven! This particular version means that even if the cheese has run out or isn't handy, the cheese flavour is already there. What I love about Nairns is that they package up a few biscuits in mini packages so they always stay fresh within their box. It also means the mini-packages stay fresh in a handbag for emergencies when sweet biscuits are not what you feel like or you don't want to increase your salt intake. These taste natural, not too sweet and not too salty. I often pack them on day trips out to have with a flask of tea or into a handbag to eat on a plane as they're in a clear plastic wrapper. I like the traditional design of the packaging too, it's nice to see some things don't change in a world where nothing seems to stay the same for too long. Thanks Nairns for these lovely little hard biscuits that can take the weight of a bit of cheese, but not so hard you can't actually chew them. Super.
Made with mature cheddar cheese, gluten free wholegrain oats and very little else. Healthy wholegrain oats slowly release energy. Try them on their own as a stop gap before meals. Lavish a bit of time on them with the savoury topping of your choice.
