      Very helpful

Thin but satisfying (if you eat more than one)

In my family we're all quite partial to particular brands of crackers, (the edible variety). I like my Ryvitas while hubby and the kids like Jacobs Cornish Wafers. However, sometimes I like to break away from routine and try something different.

I don't often have the time to browse for new or different products in supermarkets but a couple of months ago I was killing time while waiting for someone and since it was a cold rainy day, the Waitrose supermarket seemed very inviting.

I don't usually shop in Waitrose so I was very interested to see lots of different brands, particularly within the cracker and crispbread shelves. One brand that caught my eye were these MacVita Wholemeal Crackers with Bran from Simmers.

Probably what grabbed by attention in the first place was the manufacturers name - Simmers, which, being an avid follower of diet products, I misread as Slimmers! But, it could easily have been slimmers because these crackers only contain 27 calories each.

They come packed in a bright red box with four individual cellophane wrapped packets of crackers. Inside each of the packets are eight crackers. They're very thin only 1mm and around the same width as a round digestive biscuit. Their appearance is a lovely pale brown colour with flecks of bran throughout the cracker.

I've tried these crackers both on their own as well as with various toppings. On their own, which is probably the best method of testing their taste, they have a lovely light crispy texture with a very satisfying crunch. You can taste the bran which gives them a lovely earthy flavour and they are surprisingly chewy. When you bite into them, they don't fall apart or flake everywhere as some crackers do. This makes them a great choice for using as a base for toppings.

Since they're so thin it only takes me about three or four bites before I've finished one so they're not quite as substantial as a Ryvita, for example. The children really like them and I like to include them in their lunch boxes as an alternative to sandwiches from time to time. A couple of these crackers hold together really well with various fillings inside and remain crunchy until lunchtime.

Nutritionally, each cracker contains 27 calories, 0.8g of fat and 0.7g of fibre making them a very healthy choice of crackers.

Allergy wise, they contain gluten but despite mentioning on the packet that the recipe and the factory are nut free, they can't guarantee that the ingredients are nut free! Suitable for veggies and vegans alike and they contain no artificial colourings, flavouring or preservatives.

I purchased these crackers from Waitrose supermarket for only 69p for a box of 32 crackers.

      Ingredients List:

Wholemeal flour (74%), Vegetable oil (11%), Malt Extract, Partially Inverted Sugar Syrup, Wheat Bran (2%), Raising Agent: Ammonium Bicarbonate, Natural Flavouring, Salt.
